No, it’s not that finely delineated. Vikings can refer to the people whose origin lies in the Vik, or as an activity Vikingyr (or something along them lines). It certainly does not apply in such a childish and simplistic manner as your implication. It is a common but lazy application of the word that is untrue. It’s like when people talk of the Celts as one people, not true either.

Family groups, larger tribes would have settled, they were known as Danes, Norsemen, whatever but not universally as Vikings, a term that was used to describe raiders rather than settlers, merchants etc.

Despite your assertion to the contrary , the term ‘Viking’ is not correctly used when applied broadly to a group of people. It should be used only to refer to raiders not to the tribal group as such. Vikings were the dudes who landed, raided and left not the traders, craftsman, families and settlers (this is where the academic thought I’ve encountered lies).
