Ask a Muslim!

you must have missed my question about hookas. Also, what’s your explanation for the interior decoration of mosques (at least traditional ones) being so damn psychedelic?

and about the decoration, I dunno it’s complicated and amazing in the same time.

edit : Hookas have nothing to do with Islam man, but I dunno it’s something to do with Arabic culture in general not with Islam, but let me assure you that the arabic Hooka is the best in the world and I bet my two cents that you’ll damn love it !

When was the Qur’an written and by whom? Muslims believe that they are descendants of Ishmael, a son of Abraham, right? What are other common things between Qur’an and Bible?

Qur’an wasn’t written at first, it was memorized by the Prophet and his “sahaba” but when he died the caliphs decided to “write” the Qur’an into paper.

and to be humble and honest, the only “REAL” difference between Christianity and Islam is that, they say Jesus is the Son of God, while we on the other hand we believe Jesus is just another Prophet and “Human”

yeah. And the beards.
Is the not shaving thing universal among islam?
if so/if not… what’s the reasoning behind it?

it’s not a “recommended” thing it’s personal preference, you don’t need a beard to believe in God.

So I shaved for nothing?

Well fuck me sideways.

I’m not Muslim and even I can answer.

Mosques are decorated for the same reason churches are, to look awesome and remind followers of the wonder of god. Mosques are traditionally decorated with tessellating tiles, a cultural influence from the Arabic world. However, you will notice that there are no actual images of humans, creatures or plants in the decoration. Instead mosque patternings are made up of crazy symbols and such. This is done out of respect to god, who is the only one allowed to create life, in any form.

And Shadi, if you start a thread called “Ask a Religious follower of X” then the first thing that will pop up is a theist/deist argument. If you want to talk about Islamic culture start a thread about that.

I thought Islam was a religion though… not a race or culture in it’s own right… you might ask about arabic culture…

And ok if it’s a personal preference… Then why is having a beard so popular amongst muslims?

And on the topic of mosques and churches:
Diehard Follower: This structure proves God is great
Observer: Really? cus I think it was the artists, architects and engineers who did an excellent job
Diehard Follower: SHUT UP!.. THEY WERE INSPIRED BY GOD!
Observer: so… they DIDN’T know what they were doing?
Diehard Follower: what is knowledge? I refuse to partake of the forbidden fruit!

just the whole ‘inspiring the power of God’ thing
… I have no problem with people citing the immense power of God, but when it gets to the point where they DOUBT the power of man as though we’re blindfolded children and destined to be so… >.<

It hasn’t been said here or anything but that stuff and those points of view DO happen.

Evidentally not. :meh:

But Jews have always been a race and a religion. They are an exception. You cannot become a Jew by any other means than by having a Jewish mother.

Yeah, but there’s a difference between churches and mosques - mosques are psychedelic as fuck. There must be something about Arab/Islamic history or culture that causes them to associate psychedelia with religion.

Hey Shadi. Thank you for being willing to share your faith. I think you have done so in a way that dignified and reasonable, and you have my respect.

As for me, I claim no religion really, though I do like the concept of Grace (for whatever that may be worth) I do also enjoy Theology and am having an enjoyable time reading through some of this thread.

It may be of interest to you and to those participating, the following website. It is a comparative between Muslim faith, and that of the Christinan faith. It seems to be a reasonable site, so here is the link.

https://muslim-canada.org/islam_christianity.html

I do in fact have a question conerning that of the Muslim take on Christ. I am somewhat confused, and that is likely owing to my past in Chrstianity, so hopefully, you can set me straight on this matter.

That being, if Christ was not who he claimed he was, then why should he be regarded as anything other than a fraud? It is my understanding that the Muslim take is that he was a prophet, and a teacher, and a holy man. If he was not the person claimed in the text of the bible, then one of two things has to be true.

  1. What is claimed in the bible is false, (As in, the gospels are only claiming that Christ said he was the “I am” (A reference to Moses in front of the burning bush when he asked God, Who do I say sent me? And God said “Tell them “I am” sent you”.) To which the teachers of the Law tried to kill him, for claiming he was God - when he wasn’t.

  2. Or it is not reasonable for Muslims to only claim him as being a prophet, when he was in fact the Massiah.

(I am not saying either - I just merely point out that one perspective is not quite true)

So that being said, I am just curious as to your take on this? (I am not trying to box you in, just trying to understand) I find it confusing really. Because if Christ is a teacher/prophet, where can I learn about him from the Muslim text?

Again Shadi, I do appreciate your willingness to share your faith, as I think you are a good embassedor for the Muslim perspective.

Not so my friend… Not according to this anyways.

I already explained that mosques are decorated bearing in mind that no living things can be shown. You’re just assuming that the patterns put in place instead of animal/human iconography that exist in churches is somehow related to psychedelia.

Anyone can make a non-representational pattern that isn’t psychedelic. Mosques could easily look like this without being trippy.

man, I Told you all when I first started this thread : I’ll Answer with my own experience of Islam, I don’t claim I know everything about it but am still learning and willing it spread the right information.:3

thanks
I’ll check that site later.

ok now as for Jesus, we were told that he is indeed a prophet and the messiah, there is a whole Surat in the Quran that talks about Jesus “Isa” and his blessed mother marry and it covers nearly his entire story, there is really one interesting verse that sums up the entire story which roughly translate into that God saved Jesus from the Jews and the Romans who came to execute him and made his traitor servant looks exactly like him so they thought he was Jesus and they put him on cross, and we believe in the 2nd coming of Christ. but not as Christians think of it.

Ok, that clears up a lot. You can understand the concern… If there was no real supporting text regarding an opinion for Jesus, then a person would have to ask “why” the opinion is held. The issue being, that if there was no real supporting text from the Muslim take… How could he be called good? (Blah blah blah)

I will have to keep an eye out and have a read when I find a copy. Interesting.

Cheers Shadi, and thanks again.

What’s your opinion on the treatment of islamic women? As in, do you agree that they should have to wear hijab’s (I think that’s how it’s spelt), that they shouldn’t be allowed to go to certain parts of the mosque, etc.

when you say the word Hijab, I do support it but NOT by Force ! it’s Personal preference after all, I for one as many other Muslims Hate that entire Body cover ! gosh ! I mean even the Prophet Himself said that it’s allowed for women to show their Faces and Hands and the reason for that is : Faces resemble beauty and Hands resemble good health etc…)

but I didn’t get what ya meant about “not” going into certain parts of the Mosque ? :S

It was my understanding that women weren’t allowed to be in the same part as men for prayer.
