Exodus 34:10-28
Then the LORD said: “I am making a covenant with you. Before all your people I will do wonders never before done in any nation in all the world. The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the LORD, will do for you. Obey what I command you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare among you. Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles. Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices. And when you choose some of their daughters as wives for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods, they will lead your sons to do the same. Do not make any idols. Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv, for in that month you came out of Egypt. The first offspring of every womb belongs to me, including all the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock. Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem all your firstborn sons. No one is to appear before me empty-handed. Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest. Celebrate the Festival of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of Ingathering at the turn of the year. Three times a year all your men are to appear before the Sovereign LORD, the God of Israel. I will drive out nations before you and enlarge your territory, and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the LORD your God.Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast, and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Festival remain until morning. Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God. Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.” Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant–the Ten Commandments.
Also, the Valley of Hinnom exists but people aren’t sent there for being bad anymore either.
What you’re thinking of, Assassin, did not come from the Bible at all. What is commonly thought of, today, as “Hell” actually came from the 14th century from Dante’s poem: “The Divine Comedy” (la Divina Commedia), the portion entitled “Inferno”.
You don’t seem to see the difference between reading the bible to understand what people believed and where those beliefs came from, and taking the word of the bible literally. Taking the bible as evidence as to where the belief of hell came from is completely valid, but it is just text, it does not necessarily contain the truth. Treat the bible as any other ancient book and it is very useful for historians and archeologists
It is like the Egyptian “Book of the Dead”: it is not true, but it helps to show how ancient Egyptian religion was. Or you could see when the personage of Harry Potter was invented and how he was originally: in this case, you can use fiction books as evidence of that, but that doesn’t mean those books contain the truth.
And we all know Harry Potter and Osiris did not exist
Well, let’s take these words from Jesus:
That means, if you condemn someone, you will be condemned.
Therefore (according to the bible) we’ll see each other in hell
If I go to hell I really want to see you there. and how will I enjoy that moment!
I know about inferno but I also know about some Georgian Religious books of 6th and somewhere 9th century books where hell is mentioned.
this isn’t in 10 commandments and even if it was it must have some other meaning in it than just boiling goat…
The point is, Assassin, something merely showing up in a book doesn’t necessarily make it factual. There needs to be evidence. There is no more evidence of this “Hell” of which you’re referencing than evidence for Hogwarts or Azkaban. They are referenced in books, but there’s no evidence for them.
As for other things that are referenced in those books (the Valley of Hinnom, Kings Cross Station, the Prime Minister of England, and so on), there is evidence for these things.
Do you have evidence for what you believe to be “Hell”? Because the Hell in the Bible is either complete separation from God (which is not really a place) or the valley just outside Jerusalem.
there is enough evidence against your statement that hell was a part of dantes imagination.
also hell in bible is the place where satan got exiled and that is all.
Er… ok. Dantes Divine Comedy proves that Hell exists?
… I’d really like to take some LSD and meet you in your dreamworld one day, it sounds smashing.
Dante Alighieri, the writer of The Divine Comedy, of which Inferno is the second act, an Italian poet in the 1200’s, right on the cusp of the High Middle Ages, during the Christian Crusades, ergo slap bang in the middle of the Catholic Churches vice-like grip on the hearts and minds of the european continent.
Merely because a poet wrote of Hell during a period of extreme orthodoxy does not prove the existence of Hell.
from what you concluded that? …please read correctly.
Provide some of this evidence, please. It must be more than “The Bible says…” because “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s/Philosopher’s Stone says Hogwarts exists”.
Really? You will be in an everlasting torture, in the exact same position that me.
God will tell me: you deserve eternal torture because you were a bad boy.
Then God will tell you: you deserve eternal torture because you were a bad boy.
And you will still be selfish enough to think you are better than me?
It is worse than I imagined. You scare the shit out of me D:
Of COURSE he really wants to see you there - wouldn’t that just be a huge kick in the crotch to Assassin if he went to Hell and you didn’t?
I can see, though, the attraction to the idea of Hell. People wish for a sense of justice. We hate the idea that Hitler’s punishment was simply death, which is the same fate we all share. We want to think that there is justice.
But if we imagine Hell, we should imagine populating it with people like Hitler, not people that simply don’t believe what you believe.
“You don’t believe what I demand you to believe, therefore I wish you excruciating torture for all eternity. You shall pay for your insolence”
As if . . .
we know that Harry Portter is fictional what you can’t say about bible.
it won’t be torture for me when I will know that every human gets what he deserves.
also I explained before that there are different levels in hell and less you sin less deeper you are.
no it won’t be, I just care for everyone to get what they deserve even myself
I can’t?
You don’t know what the term “torture” means. Also, the bible doesn’t give “levels” for Hell. A liar and a murderer get equal treatment in Hell according to the Bible. Again, yours is from Dante’s “Inferno”.
You’re absolutely right. That’s Dante.
He’s just so full of Faith that he’s willing to believe ANYTHING is the Truth of God … if that’s what he thinks he’s supposed to believe. He’s just a good boy.
Assassin, tell the truth.
You’re putting me on, aren’t you?
I apologise, I misread your post.
This is concerning. Are you saying everyone deserves to go to Hell? That the default position of Man is to sin?
I ask why you would beleive in a God that clearly shows no compassion for man. A God who according to your interpretation is filled with hatred and vengeance. This is odd.
What if a guy kills hundreds of people and commits genocide? that means he would go to hell if he died but he can’t die, if he can’t die he can’t be punished
That’s EXACTLY what Christianity believes. It’s called Original Sin - we’re born as sinners. Apparently, we’re responsible for Adam and Eve eating the fruit.
this is also what many Christians believe.
not everyone but most.
are you sure you have read bible? you know what wonders me? actually it isn’t something new but still why humans forget about everything good so fast? you all remember all that bullshit about goat and other things and forget about that lot more important is written there. god of hatred and vengeance? is that the god that forgives you everything if you regret? I don’t think so. is this god that wants from you only love and goodness and nothing material? I don’t think so. so please don’t all the god in which I believe is full of hatred. it is me who hates and it is me who is angry.
we live in same dimension?
no, in dantes inferno there is something between hell and heaven where you get chance to regret and “normal” hell has its levels and i don’t clearly remember clearly where is is written and I am not going to search it for you.
I see that you can’t live with that harsh reality. go kill yourself. I won’t hold grudge.
…
just when you say something unimportant about sining remember that everything will be forgiven if you truly regret.
