What if I don’t enjoy it? Whatcha gonna do then?
On topic: I’m too chickenshit for these types of games. I played the first Amnesia up until I had a close encounter with that thing and just said nope.jpg
That said, I’m very interested in Outlast tho.
Got it preloaded, comes out tomorrow. Reviews are generally favorable but it seems it’s been simplified a bit and “outright terrifying” things are less in there.
I’m very excited, it’s right up my alley in terms of horror- I spent 2 years modding Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and released one story that took me a year that focused almost entirely on building a subtle backstory with no monster chases or jumpscares, and to hear that AMFP is taking the same approach excites me greatly. Also, with no inventory and infinite lantern, that means the game will be less of an item-search and focus more on puzzles you can solve immediately, at hand, without fetching some trinket first. I’m pleased by that.
This pleases me.
You better prepare a diaper then.
I don’t really mind any of the changes except that there’s less puzzles and less environmental interaction in general. I’ll have to see for myself by playing the game though to say for sure.
as long as it isn’t full of cheap ass jump scare with loud haunted scream, I will be good for that.
Amnesia: Dark Descent hasn’t really scared me all that much yet, plus the mechanic where you start “going crazy” unless you’re near a light source is just annoying to me.
I don’t know if AMFP has this same mechanic.
It doesn’t, so you’re good to go.
If you can’t get through Amnesia, don’t even bother buying Outlast.
Outlast puts Amnesia to shame in terms of terrifying.
AMFP is more about subtle psychological horror, Outlast is more about sudden startles and jumpscares, as well as monster chases.
Machine For Pigs definitely has a pretty interesting, twisted story. I don’t think it’s told very well, but it’s still a wonderfully dark and disturbing thing to go through. My problem with it is that most of what made Amnesia so good to play has been removed, with only a general focus on body-horror and creepy atmosphere remaining.
I honestly got more of what I expected from an Amnesia sequel in Outlast- terrifying chases, tense hiding sequences, pant-wetting environments… They really nailed that constant fear for your life that comes when you’re forced to run the gauntlet of monsters that roam the halls in order to escape. They also introduced a couple of neat mechanics to make the encounters more interesting, like looking over your shoulder whilst fleeing.
What happened with A Machine for Pigs is that they focused on putting you inside the mind of the main character above all else, not bothering to keep most of the elements that made The Dark Descent so great. They don’t really focus on inducing fear, and the main gameplay has been reduced to strolling around with your infinite lantern fixing valves. It’s worth experiencing, there’s some interesting ideas in there, and while it might feel similar, it’s nowhere near Dear Esther level of narrative numbness. Mind you, as a fan of the first one who was expecting something… well… scary, or at least challenging, it’s a massive letdown.
When I get some money again, I am buying Outlast. I’m hoping for a Steam sale.
I’m not too sure about the Amnesia series, from what I hear (and have played in DD).
I just finished it, it is good, but honestly the first game is WAAY scarier
