So post actors that have made a film good or bad.
My few I’ve thought of so far.
Good:
Alan Rickman in Die hard and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski and True Grit.
Joe Pesci in Goodfellas and Casino.
Gary Oldman in Léon and The Fifth Element.
Bad:
Can’t think of any, its hard to pinpoint an actor that makes a film bad in a bad film… or a good one!
Johnny Depp in every single Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

While I can’t imagine Goodfellas without Joe Pesci or The Big Lebowski without Jeff Bridges, I wouldn’t necessarily say that they carried the movies. I mean, granted the filmmakers understood the importance of casting and that’s why they did a good job, but you can tell the skill put into the rest of those productions is still top notch.
Daniel Brühl carried Good Bye Lenin! very nicely.
Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, sure it still would’ve been great, but he really made that movie what it is today.
Isn’t the point of this thread to identify actors that made or broke a film? The Fifth Element wouldn’t be the same without Gary Oldman as Zorg, but it would still be good. Same with The Dark Knight, Heath’s performance was awesome, but a lesser performance wouldn’t have made it bad, unless it was really abysmal.
Personally, I don’t think I’ve seen a movie that was solely ruined or carried by a single person. Except for maybe The Man in the Iron Mask. I absolutely could not stand it because of John Malkovich. I don’t really like him anyway, but when everyone around him is doing an accent and he doesn’t even try to do one…
Well if Ashton Kutcher is in any movie, I refuse to watch it. So that kinda breaks them for me.
Breaking movies: Will Farrell (in every non-voice actor role). In every movie he stars in where he’s not doing a voice for an animated character, he ruins.
Carrying movies: Eddie Murphy in the Shrek movies. Without Murphy as Donkey, the Shrek movies wouldn’t be as good… though the character he plays gets irritating after a while.
Don’t be talking trash about Will Farrell.

Johnny Depp has already been said but I’m going to say Johnny Depp in FaLiLV.
The only Will Farrell movie I’ve seen that I thought was truly great was “Stranger than Fiction”. I think he actually did a really great job in that because he wasn’t encouraged to indulge his usual persona.
I enjoyed Elf and Anchorman, but they’re not movies I’d buy.
Pacino and De Niro in every fckn movie they’ve played a lead role

Tom Hanks made Cast Away. Seriously, nobody would have watched it if it had been anyone else.
Will Smith in I Am Legend. The movie is “eh” but his performance is amazing.
I would have watched it for Jean Reno.
