A Rival To Source's Facial Animation

Kind of old now by internet standards but I didn’t see it posted here and thought some of you may have missed it.

The facial technology / animation in Rockstar Games’ new L.A Noire looks absolutely stunning…the characters look so real!

TECH DEMO

Now imagine characters such as Barney or the Gman with this kind of animation…jizz-inducing.

It’s not so much true dynamic animation as it is a pre-recorded capture of an actor’s face. Almost like a superimposed video over the character’s model.

True, but the immersion and reality it will add to games is fantastic. :3

Also, considering how detailed the face models are and how many virtual muscles they can have, it wouldn’t be unrealistic to assume that dynamic animation would be possible as well.

That is pretty awesome, although my experience with GTA IV leads me to believe that the scenes will still probably be fairly dull. I’m still something of a video game storytelling idealist, and this that a great story can be told without resorting to cutscenes. Perhaps one day.

The facial animation there was incredible…but now it just throws into light other flaws in the presentation

I might be one of the only ones that don’t like that. Too much uncanny valley for me. shiver

this ^
the glorious thing about source face animations is that, iirc, they are dynamic and move with the words detected in the voice file. they aren’t pre-rendered. therefore, source is still better.

no PC version planned

d’oh!

It was supposed to be a PS3 exclusive at first.

it looks kinda weird. they don’t have enough body movement or gesticulation to sell it to me. there’s a lot of emotion in the face, but almost none anywhere else.

And thus the problem with these advancements. You cannot leap forward in one area of presentation and leave the others, since it just makes the other parts distracting. The tech is great, but its going to need some other tech to back it up.

Damn, and I was gonna pirate it, lol.

But in all seriousness why a 360 version and no PC verison?

Maybe the control scheme is completely based around the console controls, like Heavy Rain.

Partly true, but isn’t getting the lip-syncing correct a pain in the ass with Face Poser? I tried it years ago and couldn’t get to grips with it even after week or two, yet I can quite easily pick up 3DS MAX or Premiere; all that phonetic tweaking drove me nuts. Even BM had choreography trouble a while ago IIRC.

Having said that, Source is a good D.I.Y alternative for mods and machinima; the tech being shown here will obviously not be available to anyone with less than £$1million+ (total guestimation). :3

Hasn’t that day already come? Half-Life manages it.

Holy shit, @25 seconds in, was that Denethor!?!?!

Source reminds me of the AK-47

Cheap, reliable rendering

That’s right, Dr. Walter Fucking Bishop.

Well yeah. But I mean when its a much more common occurrence.

But what if it’s Walternate??? :fffuuu:

This.
