Well, I don’t think it “replaces” an actual person, there are probably many people behind that anime character than when an actual person is on stage dancing and singing.
What impresses me on that video is how real her movements feel, the way she moves her legs and shoulders, much like an actual person. Why? Because there was lots of people developing the choreography, studying every detail of her movements. It is not a real person singing the song, but some people created it, its lyrics and melody, and that song was sang a lot of times by actual people before that.
So, when you say it is not an actual person, I think there are in fact lots of actual people.
the voice is entirely artificial as well. go ahead and be creepy and put your creepy 3d anime characters in everything else. but holy fuck let actual people make and perform music

Probably just Motion Capture. Renting a room for a couple of hours is much cheaper than animating the whole thing with animation keys. At least if you want a decent result.
It’s called Virtual Surround and it somehow (it’s not exactly the same as the normal thing) increases the treble which gives you an illusion of a surrounding sound…
There are also things such as sound panels which you hang (on a wall) under the TV, push a button and leave the room. The device will calibrate itself to take every obstacle into consideration when playing music and offsets it’s speakers so that the sound is being reflected (mainly by the walls) properly and thus creating a “real” surround sound…

No one is saying that real people cannot perform music anymore. The fact that there are 3D holograms singing does not mean real people will stop performing. People didn’t stop painting just because the photograph machine was invented, they just fill different roles today.
My favorite singers are still humans and I don’t expect that to change anytime soon

Anime is art.
Why do you think anime characters have eyes bigger than normal? Because it expresses emotions better. In Hayao Miyasaki’s movies, every tiny movement of the characters is so fucking detailed. In Spirited Away, I was paralyzed just by seeing Chihiro going down the stairs, and I had never seen real anime in my life before that.
I don’t want to sound like an anime fag, I’m not, I just tend to put a lot of vehemence in the things that I like. I think there is a lot of shitty anime, though.
really cool animation, I will give it that… but I have to agree with fancy pants. Her voice MAY have been made by humans, but that is just it. It was MADE. All other human singers (only the good ones) have to get up there, grab a microphone, guitar, etc. Then they sing, with THEIR voices, fighting stage fright, and dancing (if the song calls for it) otherwise, it just isn’t real.
I want to see all of those that are fighting to say that the animation is better or whatever to get a AUTOGRAPH from that animation.
