I’ve never bothered with keeping up with sports. Computer > TV imo. The most I’ve ever dealt with sports is 3P Air Rifle, Orienteering, and the occasional Ultimate Frisbee game.
I’ll sometimes watch football (American) with my family and I typically watch the World Cup but yeah, I don’t keep up with sports too much.
I don’t think anyone really believes liking games means they can’t like sports, it’s just that most people who like games just don’t like sports. If we don’t like any of them why would we bother keeping up with them? Yet it’s more or less expected among the males in many countries to do so, thus leading to situations where groups of people will sit and discuss sports at length while leaving the few non-sports fans bored out of their minds. It’s happened to me on a number of occasions. So I found Pyro’s post to be pretty funny.
For the record, I do watch basketball when the Spurs reach the semifinals, but anything else is too boring to watch. Sports fans seem to enjoy understanding the dynamics and history of players and teams and the “story” of the season, but it all seems so dull to me that I need at least a little more at stake to engage my mind. Winning the championship is simple and dramatic enough for me to understand and get into. There’s also the whole thing about how ludicrously well-paid these most non-essential of jobs are. It kind of makes my brain hurt to realize how much is spent to pay grown men to throw balls around for a living. Course the same could be said of a a lot of entertainers, most of which are also outrageously overpaid.
You guys all seem to be missing the point of that bit of stand-up comedy. It has nothing to do with being a gamer and thus having to hate sports, or the other way around.
It’s about how your society takes sports for granted, so people automatically assume everybody likes sports and thus keep talking about it to everyone they see and don’t know what to talk about (“have you see the game yesterday?”). Not everyone shares the same interests as you do, so it’s just silly to keep talking about it to everyone you meet.
i.e.: I like ice hockey, but I’m fairly certain barely anyone in Belgium is interested in it, so I don’t even bother asking someone “did you check the Stanley Cup Final yesterday?”. But on the other hand, everyone assumes I’m into football/soccer, tennis or cycling just because those are the most popular sports over here, so they never shut up about it.
I’d rather hear about their experiences, travel stories, their lives, etc instead of the amazing goal Messi scored in last nighdsfkJDGNKJDLhnsgkljsqgj.uuuuurgh.
i hate televised sports, its so boooooooring
Well, I’m watching Djokovic-Del Potro right now and I’m enjoying it.
sports r so ghey, its just a bunch of over masculine people being paid to flex and make us feel like we aren’t good enuff, gosh its all just a big workout scam
oh wait nvm it happens in games too
I can get lost in watching sports matches, but It’s not something I’d seek out. Mostly because sports fans are the biggest pieces of shit on the planet, and people become their worst when they rally around sports.
What I take away from that comedy bit is that all hobbies seem stupid to people who don’t share them.
Guys.
It’s just a joke.
This is the internet, what do you expect? Anyhow, back to the funny.
I laughed way to hard at this.
Yup, even a simple lol seems too much.
The face.

fun fact: one of those ministers or preachers or whatever trying to “cure” gays has openly apologised for harming the gay people he tried to cure
