This is good for the price range, right? Any suggestions on what could be changed without making the price change all that much? I am on a ~1000 budget.

I love NewEgg but their combo deals normally aren’t worth getting. You save ~$80 but you’re locked into what they want.
Consider - the 7200.11 Seagate drives are known for their firmware issues (which result in bricked drives). This means one of two things - NewEgg has fresh versions (which should be labeled 7200.12) or they’re trying to get rid of old stock. Me, personally, I stay away from Seagate - no one I know who builds computers has ever had any luck with them.
Also, you’re handicapping that system from the start with 2 GTS 250s. You have a quad core proc, 6 GB of RAM and then two “slow” videocards (the GPU in the GTS 250 is a re-release of the 9800GTX, which is a re-release of the 8800GTX, which is a 3 year old chip). Source 1 and Source 2. The GTS250 is $260 on NewEgg…and $280 will get you a 5850, which beats the pants off the former.
Bottom line recommendation - put the list together yourself. And if you have the option, get the CPU from MicroCenter. I just bought these parts, and while NewEgg charges $289 for the i7-930, I got it at MicroCenter for $199. So there, I just saved you $90 (if there’s a MicroCenter close enough to you to make it worth the drive, it was a 25 minute drive for me). So you can take $90 off that total price, plus another $300 because of the SSD I bought, knocking you down to ~$1280. AND that’s with a 5870, which is $100 more than a 5850, so that’s $1180. Arguably, that’s a single GPU solution, but I wouldn’t trust a 650W PSU to run SLI anyway, which means you’d need a beefier PSU and up goes your price. My vote is usually to get the single fastest GPU you can NOW, instead of 2 generations-old chips.
There’s my $.02… or $.10
The above poster seems to know what he is talking about.
Be a real man, pick the parts yourself.
With your penis.
Thanks! That’s pretty informative. I’ll post my shopping cart on here in a bit.
Also, is there a way to get Micro Center to ship? Nearest store to me is in Philly and that’s a no no.
if you had bought that we would have practically the same GPU, except yours more ram and I bought mine for 20 bucks
Answer:
Do tell
Bump…
I meant that, please elaborate.
bought it used cuz its old
Oh I thought you meant the HD5850. :fffuuu:
Speaking of which, should I go for the 5850 or the 5870?
5870 has more horsepower but 5850 takes less power and potentially less heat, and no I meant the GTS250
I’m on the fence PSU wise.
Should I get,

which seems to be better for (possible) future upgrading, or,

The top one is higher power, and costs less? Gah. What catch am I missing here?

In my opinion - weak GPU, wouldn’t trust the hard drive (Hitachi might make alright drives but I go with my experience - never had a WD drive fail in 10+ years of system building), and at the moment, Intel > AMD when it comes to the majority of PC functions.
Medevilae, if you’re looking for a gaming machine, go with the Intel i7 (930 is good choice, could do the 875 but that’s not as future proof) and get the 5870. I said the 5850 due to your budget, but if you can put out another $50-60, you can get the 5870.
Unfortunately, the only way to get that price for the CPU at Microcenter is to do instore pickup. You can shop around though, I mean, I saw the 930 on eBay for ~$265 which is still better than NewEgg’s $289. Up to you though. For me, it was worth driving 30 minutes to save $90 haha.
Oh and I’d go with the Corsair PSU. They make a great product, good warranty, great reviews. I’ve never even heard of HEC haha. One thought though - you may want to consider getting the Corsair HX. I got the one you linked (obviously haha) and I had a BITCH of a time trying to stash away all the extra cables (and that’s using an Antec 900, which is a pretty roomy case). The HX is modular, so you can disconnect what you don’t need (just don’t lose the extra cables ).
Post your current system list when you get a chance.
Yes and No, but yes and then again no, yes but maybe no, no and yes. YESSSSSSSSSS. NO.
Bit by bit the answers come.
anything below a 5850 is inferior. dont stand for it
