.xxx enters the world

That’s right kids, porn sites will be able to register a .xxx extensions.

Anyway, that’s not really the biggest news (according to me, at least).

People have been trying to persuade ICANN (the company that is responsible for the domain-system) to allow for custom extensions for certain companies and regions. Banks could register a .bank, or the state of Florida could register .florida. ICANN, until now, had always declined these requests.

Porn getting .xxx is hopefully the first in a line of many to get this treatment.

At least at their own home computers. Which doesn’t really hinder the kids to get access to porn, though. It just adds to the “forbidden fruit” desire.

Could also be used for better indexing and categorizing. I also opens up the market for companies. For example: a new bank called “Money’r’Us” opens its doors, they want to launch a website (duh), but https://www.moneyrus.com/us/net/org is already taken by something non-bank-ish. That company could now register https://www.moneyrus.ban.

This can also add a certain (albeit thin) layer of security, because if you get a phishing mail, supposedly sent from your bank, and it leads you to a website that is nameofyourbankplusarandomcharacter.com, you can quickly see that it’s fake because it isn’t .bank (people notice the extension faster than the actual domainname).

I read about the .xxx domain a few years ago, and the article said the ICANN had declined the idea of the .xxx domain. IIRC it was in 2005. Also in my opinion the .xxx domain is a horrible idea. However I like the .bank or .florida thing. It kinda helps localize a few sites…
