Xen Holiday Screenshot

Here’s a screenshot from the Xen chapter:

Seems like a normal cave to me with blue water and default rock textures. In fact, it’s a possibility that this is the area in the game that the Black Mesa screenshot has expanded upon. Let’s see how it looks in context with the rest of the game.

EDIT: (This is me speaking as a member of the community, not a moderator, not a developer–because I’m not a developer as TextFAMGuy1 said.)

The old hl1 Xen water looks more green than the very swimming pool looking blue water in the Holiday Screenshot.

Doesn’t look like rock at all. Maybe you had them confused with the canyon like textures from Surface Tension.

Our screenshot has no HL1 counterpart. It’s an entirely new area.

This discussion is amusing to me.

It’s like the devs of a game set in a war torn place decided that the first and only screenshot of the game should only show a mostly intact house in the middle of a bombed out town and now some of the expecting fans are going nuts over the apparent lack of destroyed buildings in the game.

The more upsetting part, however, is how normal the house looks and how cheap the paint is.

Yes, in most situations this would be considered poorly thought out marketing on the account of showing what the game mostly doesn’t look like but in the case of Black Mesa we’re talking about a dev team who’s been so worried about not spilling the beans on Xen for so many years that it’s not surprising at all that the choice for the very first official Xen screen is largely a misrepresentation of the actual chapter.

Wow, this article is still been talking about.

So when will we see the next coming screenshots? Maybe they can prevent the people from arguing.

In my opinion, we just cannot judge the whole Xen chapter by only one screenshot, the developers also said that it’s a brand-new area that never included in the original Half-Life.

There should be different styles of the environments in Xen, some are more like an alien world, others may be like the Earth, players will get a changing feeling when we get through deeper in Xen.

That’s what the developers want to do and show us, I think.

Oh my. Forget I said anything then. I am even more stoked for the upcoming Xen chapters now! 8o

We know. Anyways since you are making brand new levels anyways, is there a chance that we might also see new monsters?

well if there were other monsters, they should have also ported to Earth in the first chapters.
My guess is that the only new “entities” we’ll get, will be some live vegetation and some none lethal stuff.

So how about a new screenshot?
40days have passed!

Well things like the gonarch along with the baby headcrabs weren’t teleported, it was a boss like enemy just like the gargantua. Sure it had kind of a story reason behind it but that doesn’t mean the Black Mesa team can’t create their own reasons. Things like the alien controllers also weren’t teleported in the first chapters, in fact we see them for the first time just before we enter xen so it’s not too wild of an idea. Though they have probably already made the levels with the current enemies in mind which will make it difficult to add new ones without redesigning things.

Got buried under a pile of comments…

I have asked TextFAMGUY1 about if they will add the removed NPCs from HL1 or create their brand new creatures to the Xen chapters in the last thread, but he has said that they were not considering this.

Though I really want to see these old friends in the remastered Border World.

What a shame : ( Thanks for sharing the info mate.

To be fair, some of the unused enemies were left unused for good reasons. cough Mr. Friendly cough

We need more rape friendly monsters in the game!

Looks awesome, reminds me of the Antilion Caves from HL2:Ep2. One question though, will we be seeing a screenshot of Xen outside?

Then they (Valve) forgot to add this part to the Original HL game!

Soon, Valve will realise they dun fucked up and add more Xen in an entirely new update called the HLX (Half-Life Xen) update, and to access it you will need to buy an access pass which costs $12! If you want more, you will need to purchase new packs such as the “Xen Achievement Pack” with 19 new achievements, for $3, and the “Xen Skin Pack” which replaces all textures with an appropriate Xen texture, which will cost $5!

After three months the Xen access pass will no longer be able to be bought and thus it can only be traded, making it extremely valuable.

Has this thread not already caused enough cancer

Honestly I think this thread has been pretty benign compared to a few update threads with people salty about Xen’s delay making a noise.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
