The ships from the newest movie took all the design elements of the entirety of the Star Trek franchise, and shit all over them. The result is the exteriors looking like creatures puked out of the depths of the ocean…much like the Cloverfield monster, and interiors that looked like they were puked out of Generic Sci-Fi Television Show #87.
The only ships that didn’t suck in ST 11 were the shuttlecraft and the Kelvin. Shuttles had the same design elements as the originals, but updated to match the modern tech. The Kelvin actually had design elements that were used in the original series, but updated to look “fresh.” Kelvin was still too organic, though.
Interiors were all white, and the glass panels were out of place. Star Trek always had all of their control panels either integrated into the furniture and walls, or, on relatively rare occasions, in little desk-like consoles. The glass panels used in ST 11 were not integrated into the design in any way, shape, or form. They were just plastered there to make it look “cool.” In any sort of situation normally seen in Star Trek, those glass panels would easily shatter, proving to be a major hazard. They also obstructed the view of anyone looking around, and they didn’t really do anything. The only time why were useful was in one scene, where they weren’t used for anything of major importance, other than having the camera focused on Checkov before he has his second and last scene in the entire movie.
The colors were also wrong. They chose white because they said it reflected the “optimism” of the future. One problem, using white doesn’t show “optimism,” is shows “cold” and “stark.” There’s a reason white is used in so many cold and depressing areas. You can keep the optimistic nature of what you want to show without using white. It’s called light tones, and bright colors. Not quite primary colors, but not washed-out or darkened colors. Wait…they already did this…IN THE ORIGINAL BRIDGE DESIGN. The 1970’s bridge had bright colors, no glass panels, and still managed to look respectable and convey the same meanings of what they wanted to do in 11. All they had to do was take the original design and updated. Rather than update the original, they radically redesigned it, so that instead of “optimistic” they got “cold.”
Plus, the original Enterprise had this amazing futuristic technology that made lens flares disappear…for some reason they decided not to use that in the new one. They also decided not to use a tripod or any sort of steady camerawork. It’s amazing how great people thought that movie was, when you could really see so little of what was going on.
I actually liked everyting about it.
The only thing I HATE is the transition from Spock turning down admission into the academy to the bar. It was so fucking stupid.
That’s about it. I was able to see and comprehend everything despite camera shake and lens flare, and I think the white sterile shiny look complements everything else in the movie perfectly. It’s not optimistic like they wanted, but it takes attention off the sets and puts them on the characters. It made scenes seem to have more depth.
As for most depressingly bad sequel? Any game that is the staple of a company, whose IP gets sold or transfered to another company (Spyro the dragon, Crash bandacoot, sigh Halo)
Halo? Gotta be joking. I mean, I’m not a Halo fanboy, and Halo isn’t as great as Half-Life, but still, I like it.
Nuff’ said.
Contract J.A.C.K on the No one lives forever series
Gotta agree, and part 3 sucked too
God i loved part one when i was about, i dunno when it was, 11?
I have to disagree good sir, Rayman 3 is a pretty good game. Not QUITE up to the standard of Rayman 2 I agree, but still a decent game
Worst sequel for me (in terms of movies) is either Mummy 3 or Indy 4
I was watching Indy 4 and all was good then all of a sudden it went “SHIA LEBOUF!”
MW2. Boring, repetetive, no skill involved etc. I think every multiplayer shooter should have classes points at BC2 and the tf series
Well, of course. Not many things are as good as Half-Life. Still, that doesn’t stop the games (or at least the first one, and ODST if it was at a reasonable price) from being great.
Reach looks fucking amazing though.
The first Rayman game (2d) was released 15 years ago I think.
Mario RPG. SNES version rocked. While I still like the Paper Mario stuff for the N64, Gamecube and Wii, when you compare it back to Mario RPG, they just come off tired.
I fucking love halo too… But I’m afraid it’s gonna go the route of Spyro and Crash if signs indicate anything.
Company created successful IP exclusive to a corporation. Company wants to move on a new IP but the Corporation objects. Corporation gives IP to another company, and they turn the once prosperous IP to SHIT.
I hope it doesn’t happen to Halo, but it probably will.
But hell, after insomniac had Spyro takenfrom them, they went on to make Jack and fucking Daxter AND Ratchet and clank. And Naughty dog did FUCKNG UNCHARTED after crash crashed.
Reach will be the last Halo as far as I’m concerned.
To me it is Unreal 2, Unreal Tournament 3, Unreal Championship 2 and Doom 3.
Im still voting for doom3
Doom 3/ quake 4.
+1 - DooM 3 for itself was not bad, but as a DooM-fan from the first hour i was disappointed because i missed the original atmosphere, the big areas and the monster hordes there. also the “new” monster design was really bad… maybe they couldn’t do it better because of hardware limitations when it came out… but i think QUake 4 is what DooM 3 had should been: big areas with better looking environments and more and better looking monsters and not only darkness.
i was disappointed about Unreal 2, too.
Doom 3 was too dark, not to mention the monsters were grossly overpowered while the weapons were grossly underpowered.
Now, the Classic DOOM 3 mod, however, shows EXACTLY what Doom 3 should of been like! Open maps, demonic atmosphere, key card collecting, fast paced action, and kick ass music in the background!
Hopefully Doom 4 will be the true sequel to DOOM II that this age of gaming needs!
this. love both aoe and age of mythology, but I HATED what they did with aoe 3. even so, too bad ensemble was disbanded.
