I’m going to wipe my PC soon what should, I do so far I have a free copy of kildisk on a CD should that be enough to wipe the drive and any viruses still on it. Also I want to reinstall my PC on the same hard drive after this. Another question as well should I buy the full version of kill disk.

Listen mate, just pop in your windows XP/Vista/7 disk, boot from it and perform a drive format before your install again. The format wipes all data from the drive. No need for 3rd party tools really.

But not really… Even after a format it is still possible to recover files and data from the harddrive.

But the OP doesn’t seem to be looking for a way to protect private information from being recovered. For reinstalling Windows, a regular format is sufficient.

Or you can just format as you’re installing. Less effort, same result.

What if viruses are still left on the hard drive, and I’ve used kill disk before and it worked nicely.

Edit: also my kill disk is a free copy so I won’t buy the program.

First of all, there is no difference how you format the drive, infact I think kildisk would be less effective than the built in windows CD format tool.

Also, if you think that viruses get wiped like that you’re an idiot.

If you have viruses that infect files, no matter how many times you wipe, as soon as you copy old files back on the drive, the virus becomes active again.

You should find a program that detects the infected files and recovers them automatically.

Always use a clean dry cloth and don’t apply too much pressure.

Oy… Is a virus the only reason you’re formatting? This might sound crazy, but some people have been able to get rid of such things more effectively by using something called “anti-virus software”. Cutting edge, I know… O_o

Seriously though, if you backup your virus-infected files and then format your drive (no matter what software you use), it will return once you reload your backup files. So again, it doesn’t matter what you use. We already told you the format tool included with the Windows installer is good enough, so stop asking us about different programs and make up your own damn mind. SHIT!

I don’t have anything important on my PC anyway. So i’m not backing it up.

So if you’re not backing anything up and you want everything deleted, why not use a magnet?

Or use the FBI data securing method:

  1. Wipe the disk with a magnet

  2. Overwrite it with random ones and zeros 600 times

  3. Crush the disk to bits and sell them to be used in mortar

  4. Buy a new HDD
