Windows stripped my grub loader

I can’t boot into linux now this does suck I spent like 2 years customizing it :3 I know windows had something to do with this.

Ok, first you need to find out what GRUB version your Linux install uses. You can bet that the latest Ubuntu version ships with GRUB 2.

For GRUB legacy:
GRUB got deleted; how to restore?
I would advise reading all of it since it gives you a better understanding of the bootloader. (don’t forget that even if your Hard Drive is only second in the Hard Drive boot chain the “root” device will always be “hd0”, the Hard Drive where GRUB is placed on will always be considered the first Hard Drive by GRUB. This has been changed in GRUB 2, just throwing that in)

For GRUB 2:
GRUB 2 recovery

So make sure you have a good understanding of how GRUB treats the devices it’s installed on before you hit setup because after that you might well be left with no valid boot configuration at all. Not really a big issue since you could still boot again from a Linux CD and retry or fix the MBR with the Windows 7 DVD and come back to your initial issue :stuck_out_tongue: .

You should definitely try burg (Brand-New Unified Bootloader).

It’s like a graphical spinoff of Grub, and it’s really easy if you have Ubuntu.
