The compositing window manager requires more memory than XP, as does the more recent kernel. Vista also makes heavy use of RAM for precaching, as Paddy described.
I have only had a few issues with software and hardware, namely System Shock 2 (but that hardly runs on XP either) and my Logitech webcam. The webcam was Logitechs fault, they never released an updated driver for it :meh:
Again, I use XP and Vista daily and I’ve always found Vista to be the same or even a little faster.
It doesn’t whore resources, it takes notice of what programs you use most often and pre-loads them in to memory. It also actively defrags your HDD. It doesn’t just take all the RAM and sit on it, it uses it.
As above.
Besides, you have RAM for a reason.
TO GET USED.
Having lots of RAM and complaining about things that use it up is like having a sweet car you never ever drive, then complaining about petrol prices.

I can live with $50 for an upgade, but don’t tell those bastards at MS that I said that.
I noticed no differenve between Vista and XP, except Vista has more (unnecessary, I admit) effects.
Windows 7 has even more, so live with it.
Windows 7 is maybe the first OS I’ll buy, because it’s worth the money
The only issue I’ve had with windows 7 is a weird full screen/dual screen thing with certain steam games.
Anyone else have that issue?
I never said it’s a bad thing, they are just not needed. I’m using Vista and I’m very content with it
Hybrid Sleep
Per-app volume management
Desktop gadgets
Address space randomisation
UAC
Massively improved start menu
Tighter search integration
Just a few off the top of my head, there are many more.
I still get misunderstood
I want to say, I like Vista and it is by no means worse than XP, like everyone claims
Hybrid Sleep = means less compatibility
Per-app volume management = annoying as fuck
Desktop gadgets = useless as fuck
Address space randomisation = uses more ram
UAC = annoying as fuck, and very useless because your spyware can install itself easier that way.
Massively improved start menu = you can’t imaginge how much I hate it
Tighter search integration = I hate when I search for something and all of my porn images show up with preview thumbnails in the instant search results… Also I prefer XP’s “run” menu.
Lmao, fail.
Hybrid sleep - if it’s not compatible, just turn off s3 or s4, whichever doesn’t work. No feature degradation.
Per-app volume management - if you don’t want it, don’t use it. How can it be annoying?
Desktop gadgets - actually pretty handy IMO, you need to cast about for the right ones though. Having a decent CPU meter onscreen at all times, for example, is a godsend for people like me.
Address Space Randomisation - I don’t think you understand how it works. If it uses any more RAM than before, then it’s an insignificant amount. Also, most other OSes do this to a greater or lesser extent.
UAC, agreed, it’s annoying, but again, if you don’t like it then just turn it off and it’s the same as XP. Also, other OSes do this kind of thing too.
Massively improved start menu - I honestly can’t see why, but even if you don’t like it, just switch back to the Classic menu.
Tighter search integration - what kind of idiot stores his porn in an indexed location? In fact, what kind of idiot stores porn? Isn’t that what the Internet is for?
Vista also has a run menu if you set it to.
The search doubles as a run box. Type msconfig or defrag in it and see what happens.
If you mean the Run dialogue, it can also be launched by WIN+R. Much easier.
Hybrid sleep - if it’s not compatible, just turn off s3 or s4, whichever doesn’t work. No feature degradation.
but it’s something the motherboard manufacturers should work on, not the OS makers.
Per-app volume management - if you don’t want it, don’t use it. How can it be annoying?
you can’t turn it off, at least I didn’t find the old XP menu anywhere, I just want the old sndvol32.exe from XP that I can use to control wave/master/midi/linein and choose my recording source (line in/stereo mix/mic)
Desktop gadgets - actually pretty handy IMO, you need to cast about for the right ones though. Having a decent CPU meter onscreen at all times, for example, is a godsend for people like me.
I don’t use performance meters, except for temperature, which fits in the taskbar.
Address Space Randomisation - I don’t think you understand how it works. If it uses any more RAM than before, then it’s an insignificant amount. Also, most other OSes do this to a greater or lesser extent.
I don’t think I need to understand, XP works better, even without it.
UAC, agreed, it’s annoying, but again, if you don’t like it then just turn it off and it’s the same as XP. Also, other OSes do this kind of thing too.
Turning it off defeats the purpose, UAC should not exist, spyware could be blocked by different, less annoying ways.
Massively improved start menu - I honestly can’t see why, but even if you don’t like it, just switch back to the Classic menu.
that defeats the purpose, why not just use the same start menu for everyone and make it fully customizable?
Tighter search integration - what kind of idiot stores his porn in an indexed location? In fact, what kind of idiot stores porn? Isn’t that what the Internet is for?
My internet doesn’t always work, and I don’t want to waste bandwidth on redownloading porn
I just don’t like changes, I love how easy to use XP is because I’m used to it, new features just confuse me.
So Sersoft, basically, you hate Vista because it isn’t XP, because that’s that’s the point you’re proving here.
Solid argument.
I use Vista, it isn’t the greatest OS ever, but it isn’t bad at all. UAC isn’t as bitchy when configured, just right click your C:\ drive and change the permissions so you don’t get yelled at whenever you just freaking want to rename one folder.
Definitely going to upgrade to 7 though. Might get the RC if I can clone my disk onto a bigger drive. 40gig laptop drives run out of space quickly when you have steam, windows, and suse.
Fun fact of the day: go on cnet or amazon or whatever and read the REALLY old reviews of XP (from like 2001) and you’ll see that it was criticized for essentially the same reasons as Vista.
Yeah I remember that, all the games lagged on XP and some didn’t even work right, and software wasn’t compatible, after a few years though, it became the best.
If Microsoft stopped making a new OS every 2 years and lets windows 7 be the only OS for a few years, people are gonna get used to it just like XP.
