Will this work?

So after about 7 or 8 months of almost daily lurking I decided to register today.

I’ve always been a massive fan of the original Half Life and have been waiting for a mod like this to be released since Half Life 2 came out.

So anyway I’ve always been a console gamer. However in the past 2 or 3 months I’ve come over to PC gaming. It’s obviously a much more logical choice etc etc but this thread is not for discussing that.

About a month ago I finally downloaded Steam. A week ago I downloaded Half Life 2 Demo and Portal. I know I probably sound like a cheap skate here, but since I have Half Life 2 and all the episodes on 360 I don’t feel much need to buy it for PC too.

I’m wondering if I will be able to run Black Mesa (and other mods) only having those 2 games downloaded.

If it is possible, is there anything different I have to do from the generic instructions when installing mods?

no, that’s probably not going to work

you will need a PC copy of the orange box. 'nuff said
Black Mesa Will Not work with the Half-life 2 Demo or free portal as neither of those comes with the requisite SDK and SDK base 2007. You Will Need to purchase The Orange Box for PC in order to enjoy Black Mesa.

Thanks.

EDIT: One more thing. Will other HL2 mods work with just HL2 Demo/Portal?

HL2 mods run fine with HL2 demo. Just change SteamAppId from 220 (HL2) to 219 (HL2 demo) in gameinfo.txt in the mod’s directory.

Haven’t tried ep1, ep2 or portal mods yet. If anyone has, feel free to share your experiences.

Leet, if you weren’t living under a fucking rock you could have known that yesterday was the last day you could download Portal for free and a full version that is. :meh:

I don’t know, what kind of mods you are playing (from 2005)?
But all mods (since 2006) require the Source SDK Base, which only comes with a “purchased” Source game.
Also the HL2 demo has many missing content, as textures and sounds.

The free Portal Download doesn’t have the Source SDK and doesn’t support mods. you would need a purchased copy to have that.

That’s relevant how? He’s already said he got Portal last week.

Some live under a rock, some have rocks for eyes.

So the cheapest way to obtain Source SDK is to buy HL2: Deathmatch, right?

Correct

Great, thanks. Does someone know how large is the HL  M installation?

Meet mattemuse, first to post, hes like the guy that rushes for first kill in cod.

132 MB according to my deathmatch folder.

Are you sure? It looks too small to me…

if im not mistaken wasn’t this that guy’s first thread? Therefore I’m more like a spawn camper in COD.

:s hrug:

and here I was going to suggest he get HL2DM for free.
