OHHH you’re one of those kids who likes to be the internet tough guy. GREAT…
Yeah I’m super e-thuggin can’t you tell?
I jsut assumed you were another punk kid. With this new knowledge I know you are just another punk kid.
Right. Because e-thugging has sooo much to do with running BMS on a Mac.
Honestly, I’m not sure how well BMS would even run on most Macs. Considering that high-end GPUs like the Radeon 58xx series aren’t available for macs (if they are, my bad, but they are probably WAY too expensive, and most Mac users wouldn’t have them anyway), I’m not sure how well recent Source games would even run.
Any feedback from current bootcamp users? How well do recent games run on macs, and please also state the hardware in your mac.
Thanks.
EDIT: I’m not claiming that you need the latest GFX card to run source games, what I’m saying is that AFAIK Macs aren’t made for their gaming power. As in, their GPUs arent as powerful for the price as ones found in PCs.
… to ^^^.
I have HL2, Ep1 and Ep2, as well as Portal and Team Fortress 2 running through WINE on my Mac and its damn near perfect. A native port would only be better.
So yes, Black Mesa will run on Macs.
Alright, thanks for your feedback.
I’m just curious, what are the hardware specs of your Mac, what was the price you paid for it and when, what graphics settings are your games tuned to, and do you have any idea of the framerate you get?
You can upgrade components on a Mac Pro; a Mac Pro is basically a Windows/Linux PC but with Mac OS… with no keyboard, mouse or monitor for £1,940. It’s CPU isn’t a desktop CPU either so it probably wouldn’t be too good for games…
The platform is also incredibly closed.
I’ve got a Macbook Pro with:
2.53 Ghz Core 2 Duo
4GB DDR3 RAM
NVidia Geforce 9400M 256MB
250GB HDD
It cost $AUD1850, but that went down to $AUD1700 with a cool student discount (and FREE iTouch - WIN!).
I got Half Life 2 and Episode 1 running on DX9 with maximum settings. Reflections were screwed up in the former, but I want to try it with the Half Life 2: Update mod installed because they seem to work fine in HL2: EP2. I ran into some missing texture issues in EP2, so I ran it with DX8.1 with all settings maxed out, which, I must say, looks as good as DX9. Didn’t run into the same texture issue in Portal or TF2, which is odd, but performance is fantastic with DX8.1, so I’d recommend going with that anyway.
Framerate? Well, its a little difficult to give an exact answer, given that it varies dramatically. In the first area of EP2, the framerate hovers at 33 whilst outside, dropping to 20 when the ‘portal storm’ hits, going up to about 55 when inside the tunnel, but never actually seeming slow (perhaps it uses frameskip to remove any jerkiness?).
Oh, and I couldn’t get them to run without ticking the ‘emulate virtual desktop’ option. No biggie. I also made X11 run in full screen, but can’t work out how to change it back . Again, no biggie.
How much is that in amurican??
Euhhh, about $1550*.
Bear in mind that $1700 is about average in Australia for a laptop with those specs. Believe me, I shopped around, and I know exactly how much we get screwed with computer prices.
Right.
I can’t help it, you’ll have to forgive me, but for $999 USD here in the states, I got this:

And a 9400 is quite underpowered for today’s games, but I guess thanks to the incredible performance of the Source engine its possible, even on a Mac. Thanks for your specs.
I hate to be the one to inform you of this, but it appears that you are being assraped by your country.
I’d say all mac gamers can enjoy their nice o,000000000000001 fps.
That gets better fps than I do on my windows pc,
That’s because your Windows PC cost £180.
For 180 pounds im sure you can build a better performing PC than any mac costing <1k
He didn’t build it.
…I know, I’m just saying its possible.
Oh, I know it’s possible, and one can make a rather good base-unit that can do basic tasks for £180.
It costs more if you don’t build it, so ITC it is even more possible.
