I think that if I ever want to play the half life story, I will play Black Mesa. But at some point I’ll play the original just for the point of playing the original.
I’m hoping this game is going to be detailed enough that it will take forever to find all the little secrets and little details and things and stuff and etc. It will probably replace Half Life 1 for a long time.
I don’t think it will entirely, but if and when Operation Black Mesa and Guard Duty finish I probably wont touch the old style games again (a Decay remake seems like a bit of a stretch though).
I think that it will certainly be what I show people who are new to the half-life series, mostly because I’ve found some people get put-off by dated graphics. Though after I’ve hooked them I will certainly show them the original.
The original though for me, will always have a special place in my heart, no matter how awesome the mod is.
It is too bad that this isn’t going to be a boxed game you buy in the store. Because then it would be standing like a trophy on my desk next to the original Half-Life.
I LOVED the story and feeling of Half-Life 1, Then Half-Life 2 made me buy a new PC. The Graphics of Half-Life 2 were so awesome. These 2 combined is like a dream come true.
Make a box, then you’ll feel proud you made a box.
That, my friend, is an excellent idea! Will do! At the moment pretty busy, but when I get to it, I’ll show the progress
I’ll be too busy playing Balck Meas to care about HL1 or BM.
It’ll have to. I had to uninstall Half-Life to get Steam to install… Only 1.10GB left:’(
I used to think that BM wouldn’t replace HL, but now that I’ve played HL2 1/45th the amount of times I’ve played HL, I’m not so sure. Everything in HL looks short and fat. :\
I finished up HL on my laptop a few days ago, not having played it all the way through in a while. I have the feeling that will be the last time I’ll be playing it through for a long time*, as I do expect BM to replace HL for me. HL will always hold a special place in my heart, but to be able to play it with upgraded graphics and more logical gameplay will make BM so much more fun. I will undoubtedly still go install HL occasionally and play to bring back fond memories, but most of my visits to the BMRF in the future will be from BM, not HL…
*unless BM still isn’t out in many months, I sorta want HL to be fresh in my mind, so I can compare…
Hello everyone. After much lurking I finally decided to register. Despite my die hard love for HL, it was the discussion about the most badass videogame character which prompted me to register lol.
The bottom line is this: The only goal of BM, IMHO, should be to increase the immersion factor of the original HL. How can this be accomplished? I’m simplifying but, better AI (check), better graphics (check), better sound (check), improved physics (check), increased square footage and props (check)…all thanks to the orange box.
So far, so good, with immersion increased, BM is on its way to replacing HL, but what else is needed?
I feel BM will replace HL for me as long as the level design and placement (with regards to scripted events, environment variability, obstacles: fighting-puzzle-platforming, and NPC interaction opportunities) remains unchanged. Basically, I’m referring to each moment in the game that really caught your attention & focus and made you think (I’m not talking about simply waking the hallways of the facility or crawling in vents). I feel these essential moments are required to keep the “soul” and essence of HL. If any one of these components is removed or drastically altered, the story and pace of HL is changed. Once that happens, BM no longer HL at its core and cannot replace it.
You may be able to add some new moments to lengthen or improve gameplay and still keep true to the original, but that is truly a matter of opinion.
I hope this made sense lol.
That does make alot of sence, and I can say I agree fully.
I’m just waiting for this killer suspense to become fleeting, so I can enjoy BM to the fullest with the lights out and my sound turned way up.
While I definitely hope that Black Mesa remains true to Half-Life, I approve of the mod team’s decision to slightly alter some areas and puzzles to improve upon the faults of the original. I was particularly happy to hear that ‘On A Rail’ had been shortened.
I also hope that with the new visuals and slight alterations, it will feel unique enough to be really thrilling (and occasionally even frightening) the first play through, like when playing Half-Life for the first time.
I guess I just hope that Black Mesa provides an opportunity to re-experience Half-Life at its best.
Exactly, I agree.
half life 1 can never be replaced guys.
That’s not true everytime my computer notices an updated version of something it seeks out and destroys all copies of previous versions this is why I can’t watch movie sequels
my dvd shelf is in shambles
