Will Black Mesa replace Half Life 1 for you?

No, it wont replace HL1. HL1 is my favorite game, and will never be replaced! But Black Mesa Source looks awsome, and will probably be my 2nd favorite

i care little about sentimental values and putting games on a pedestal. aa2 was my favorite game for some time. but when aa3 came out, i immediately deleted everything related to aa2 off my computer. it’s as if it never existed. i hardly even remember all the good times i had. even if i liked half life1, i wouldn’t hesitate to skull-fuck gabe newell if that is what it takes to secure a release for black mesa source.

It is not possible to push Half-Life from the place it holds in my heart. Black Mesa may push and shove but nothing can really beat the original in my opinion.

Stop necroposting :hmph:

I think necroposting is bad if you don’t contribute to the threadƧ Oh Well. Carry on!

It’ll depend on how it turns out, naturally.
I’m sure there’ll always be nostalgia for the original, though.

Probably. I’ve actually been holding out playing HL1 again because I want to play BM. Trying to keep my interest up. As long as It delivers the same shock and awe moments the first one had, but look significantly better.

i will replace HL1 for me but then again i am not as addicted to HL1 as most poeple on this forum. i only finished HL1 once and plan todo the same on BM

the good things of HL1 was the story and the realistic effecs in it

BM has same story only more realisetic becase of graffix

Well, that patently isn’t true. The level design is also intended to be more logical as well.

Since I“ve played Half Life only ~2 years ago, there“s not that much to replace. It“s a great game and I whenever I“m really bored I“m playing it again, because it“s really fun.
If Black Mesa can give me the same, or probably an even better experience it“ll pretty much replace Half life for me.

Just a question more to those involved with the project, but do you think if someone has never played the Half-Life series, that their experience would be better if they played Black Mesa instead of the original HL? More simply put, do you guys think BM is a replacement to the original for those who have neer played any HL games and wish to play the entire series?

No. If someone’s new to the HL series, they should play HL1 first, then play the sequels, then go back and do it again with BM. Get HL so you can say you’ve played the masterpiece, and also you’ll get a bunch of good mods. BM is a loving remake, but play the original first.

No way. I couldn’t disagree more.

Half-Life was much more revolutionary at the time than Black Mesa will be when it’s released, but in non-relative terms, objectively, Black Mesa is the better game. Better graphics, more complex levels, more fleshed-out, modern, and in-sync with Half-Life 2. If Black Mesa isn’t flat-out better, then what’s the point of making it in the first place?!

Playing HL first would only provide spoilers for and totally de-freshen the experience of playing Black Mesa. You can only enter the world of Black Mesa for the first time ONCE. Why not enter the best version of it? Most people I know would want the best experience, not ā€œso you can sayā€ this or that. That’s silly.

Half-Life is old hat. I loved it and it changed video games forever, but once Black Mesa is released, it’s flat-out obsolete. Sure, I’d recommend playing HL after Black Mesa to see the original, revolutionary game that Black Mesa is based on, but certainly not before.

EDIT: This is obviously assuming BM lives up to its potential and the makers don’t fuck it all up like most movie remakes do. (for example: the Keanu Reeves version of ā€œThe Day the Earth Stood Stillā€)

It may not be a requirement but playing through HL1 after or before playing BM will only enhance the BM experience.

Most likely it will for me. Windows 7 doesnt play hl1 correctly for me, and my pathetic comp wont run xp normally :fffuuu: . I’ve had the nostalgia for a while now, but I’m trying to hold it in so I can fully appreciate Black Mesa for what it is. :3 :3 :3

(replying to the original post because I’m late to the thread, whatever.)

I will play Black Mesa over and over again, just like I did with Half-Life 1. But, eventually, I will want to go back to the original, and play it again.

It’s not ā€œflat out obsoleteā€. A classic like Half-Life 1 will never be ā€œflat-out obsoleteā€ even if it is remade in Source. Playing it again lets you experience Black Mesa in the original way it was portrayed, outdated graphics or no.

My friend refuses to play the original Half Life- he wants to experience the game purely through Black Mesa.

This. . .

and this. . .

I agree wholeheartedly. I can’t see the original being obsolete in any way, just don’t refuse to ever play it. It’ll only blind you from truly appreciating the mod for what it truly is.

For me, as BM will hold what it promised, it will nearly completely replace Half Life 1 for me. Because I think that Half Life 1 is kind of… outdated… but it is still a kickass game
