Will 3D be the next big thing?

So as I’m sure you all know, more and more movies are being shown in 3D, there are a number of 3D TV’s being produced, and we will soon have the Nintendo 3DS on our hands. My questions to you are:

1. Do you enjoy 3D entertainment?

 1. Do you think 3D will be the next big change to entertainment? Will it have an impact like HD did, or will it be a quickly forgotten trifle like the Virtual Boy?

 2. What would it take for you to adopt 3D hardware/software?

For me, I’d say:

 1. Yes, but only recently. Back when 3D was first getting started (like in those horrible Sea World movies), it was really gimmicky. You were only there for the 3D, so the story was supporting the 3D and that of course was awful. I thought it would never go anywhere. Recently though, after having seen a few made for 3D movies, I’m rather amazed how much it added to the atmosphere for me. Even with the clunky glasses, I felt one step closer to actually being there. For movies I already loved it added more.

 2. Hard to say. It’s looking more and more that it will be just looking at how much the entertainment industries are pushing it, but it’s not a given yet.

 3. Cheaper prices, less intrusion. Once 3D stuff costs only a little more than current hardware and software, and doesn’t require you to wear special glasses, then I will begin to adopt. Until then I will just leave it for the theater.

What do you think?

It’s a little bit of an atmosphere improvement, but we certainly can’t count on it. 3D is enjoyable to me, and can actually be helpful in SOME games. If you don’t know, there is an Nvidia driver feature that lets you play just about any game in 3D. However, it really sucks for FPS’s because the crosshair can’t find a good position that’s easily associated in your mind. (you can’t focus your eyes on both the crosshair and the target at once)

I played 2008 Prince of Persia with it, and besides the washed out colors (corrected if you get Nvidia’s full-on $200 package with an entirely different method) it was actually very impressive. Another guy said horror games like Left 4 Dead feel a lot more inclusive, and a zombie running at you will make you freak out.

So you pretty much hit the most important things. If we can get those, eventually, it’d be cool.

I really hope it doesn’t. It’s just a gimmick in my opinion and (hopefully) it will die off as time goes on. Sort of like Bloom.

If this is real (doubtfully), then I just gotta laugh at nintendo.
That thing is ugly!

It’s a cool thing for CG/ otherwise lame movies, but I wouldn’t want it in my TV.

Technology manufactures want it to be BUT it’s not because of two reasons.

First is this a a forced technological paradigm. It will fail the same reason why forced memes don’t work.

Second is that people are just now, or have just recently purchased a new flat screen TV, and a smaller percentage of that have just got a blue-ray player. Now do you expect these people to move onto a completely new technology that requires to buy a new more expensive tv and a new blue ray player?

Me personally, I wouldn’t buy a 3d TV but I would consider purchasing a 3d monitor because A: cheeper B: I play my ps3 on it and there is a 3d firmware update coming out this summer.

I would like it, if not for any 3D re-release of a Toy Story and Toy Story 2 Blue-ray bundle

You should feel ashamed if you think that’s real

Edit:

And yes I noticed the spelling fail before I even saved it.

Meh, its an addon that is nice, but by no means will make or break any games. (Well, someone will screw it up so bad it breaks a game, but you get the point.)
The next big thing in gaming is going to be motion controls, unfortunately.

Gimmicky at best. I hate it on the silver screen (mainly because I don’t even notice it anymore after the first 10 minutes), and I see no future in the current form of 3D, it won’t have the same impact as color TV or HD TV.

Boo 3D!

I only say this because of the amount of time spent on the visuals, missing out completely on gameplay or story if it’s a movie. All the best movies and games are “the best” based on the story or gameplay you enjoyed; NEVER on the visuals.

I know some of you will say “Just watch it in non 3D then!” but the fact it was built as a 3D movie or game they’ll be trying to show it off and because it isn’t actually 3D you’ll just be getting these annoyed by visuals.

But hey, if they build an awesome game or make an awesome movie that just happens to be in 3D? that’ll be great, but making things 3D just for the sake of being 3D i hope is just a phase. (PS: Avatar was a terrible ‘pretty’ movie)

I really hope not. The idea of having to repeat the two hours of eyestrain from Avatar every time I want to see a movie is horrifying. I thought the possibility of a sequel was bad enough, but for EVERY movie to become 3D? shudder

I tried to play the Avatar game in 3D, couldn’t hit shit because of the “layer feeling” you get.

Will 3D be the next big thing?

I surely hope not, i like the way my HDTV is atm, and i like playing modern warfare how it is, i like half life how it is, i like the news how it is, i like sky one how it is.

This stuff should be left for movies and theme parks.

You feeling me?

I can’t say it’s in my profit. My lazy eye doesn’t allow me to watch 3D.

My friend made me see Avatar in 3D. I hated the movie and only saw it for the 3d effects.

Anyway, I was somewhat impressed with 3D but for ONE reason only. They did an excellent job of providing depth for the 3D effect, creating what seemed to be an infinite number of visual planes negating a “card-board cutout” feel. This is most likely attributed to the polarized lenses you are provided. Unfortunately, the 3D effect also enforces strict focus within the scene (depth of field), forcing the viewer to concentrate on specific visual planes within the scene, usually whatever is in the foreground or coming at you. Regular films are generally not as rigid and one can view most of an entire shot clearly. Also, for some reason due to the 3D effect, IMO the entire movie suffers from what seems like ghosting. Perhaps it is something to do with the FPS of the film or after effects on the lenses, IDK.

Avatar in 3D is the only 3D experience I have, I have not played any 3D video games or seen other movies. Due to the strict focus and ghosting effects I did not really enjoy 3D, at least not how the current technology is implemented in Avatar. Right now 3D is a gimmick and I would have hated Avatar just as much (if not less) in 2D.

IMO, standardization of 3D technology would shift the production and goal of film away from art and even more towards entertainment, where Michael Bay and James Cameron reign supreme lol. 3D could provide more entertainment value for some people, but increased film immersion and usefulness as a tool for artistic expression is questionable IMO. Story, writing, and cinematography still rule.

Besides, I love HD and my 60" Pioneer Kuros Plasma lol.

Hmm, my brother has a lazy eye, he just puts those 3D-glasses over his glasses and he can fully experience the weak 3D that 3D cinema offers.

Well, not me. I don´t see anything special. Maybe it´s just overhyped with to few frames in 3D for me to actually notice AKA Maybe it´s just me. I don’t know :expressionless:

I will play games in 3D when goggles with two screens in them become cheap and high quality. Until then, SHIT NO.

I most certainly hope not. I am an old fashioned person and I like things the way they are. I don’t want to see the day when the world becomes like freaking Batman Beyond.
