Wii U Discussion

I wouldn’t expect them to use a GPU that’s too recent. The last thing we need is another $599 launch price ala PS3.

EDIT: Still, that’s fantastic news if it’s all true. The UE4 stuff is a little mind boggling, but hell, if they can make UE3 run on an iPhone, I don’t see why they couldn’t underclock (good terminology?) some of UE4’s features for the next gen consoles.

The only thing left is it declaring other M non-canon and I would buy a Wii U just for it.

As for the console, it seems interesting in a competitive sort of way. I’d like to see Sony’s and Microsoft’s strategy against each other now.

While it is possible that they could work with the team that did the old metroid and fusion games the team was formally disbanded by nintendo awhile back making it less likely.

Wii U will not be able to run UE4.

the irony

The Wii U is a goddamn Schrodinger’s Box right now, as it is either more powerful or not as powerful as the current consoles.

Even if it is more powerful than current gen, Microsoft and/or Sony will probably have a much powerful console later on

So does this thing upscale Wii games to HD?

That’s one thing that disappoints me greatly with the PS3. I wouldn’t mind if it left everything with no 16:9 mode in 4: 3, as long as it could still render it in 720p.

no, not good terminology.

“downplay” is more suitable.

I don’t know about sony, but the next gen microsoft console is rumored to have a much similar graphics card as the Wii U, apparently still the 6000 series, and probably not the 6900 series either. of course most reports hold microsoft to release at the least in 2013. they still have a year to go after the wii U.

Just finished watching Nintendo pre-E3 direct conference where they showed off some of the Wii U’s features. There’s in integrated forum in every game. For example, they showed a guy who was having trouble in killing a zombie in a shooter game, so he actually paused the game and opened a menu on the controller where he could see people’s answers who are also stuck on that exact same spot. This forum can be typed on normally, or handwritten using Wii U’s gamepad.

They showed off the Wii U Classic Pro Controller, which is essentially a Xbox 360 controller for those developers too lazy or uninovative to make use of the main screen. This allows for local multiplayer gameplay between friends.

They showed that even the singleplayer games have online connectivity. For example, they showed off a New Super Mario Bros. gameplay towards the end of a level near a flagpole, and when Mario died close to the end and the screen faded to black, up pops little messages from people who died near the same spot and it showed what they had to say about it.

The Wii U controller functions as a webcam, and you can livechat with anyone on the Nintendo Network.

That’s about all they showed I believe. I’m looking forward to see what else they throw out this Tuesday.

EDIT: Forgot some small details. The tablet controller has clickable sticks now, as well as new grips on the back. The controller is also a universal remote for your TV. Watch the pre-E3 demonstration right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AkPdAWfFjI&feature=g-u-u

Did they reveal specs?

Not yet, hopefully they’ll reveal them on E3.

I was looking forward to both specs/battery life for the tablet. Like Maxey said, hopefully more info comes Tuesday.

Now that’s the kind if functionality that gets me excited for the WiiU. Graphics are secondary. I’m really looking forward to see how Nintendo finally embraces the online market. The 3DS was a step in the right direction, however WiiU is taking leaps and bounds. Sure, they’re a little behind in that department, but now they know they want to sink their teeth into both HD and full online integration.

I would assume that the GamePad (as it’s now officially called) as well as the Pro controller will be rechargeable via the console, a la Dualshock 3. Personally, that made the DS3’s battery life irrelevant when all you had to do was plug it back into the console to keep using it.

Found this saying the Wiiu pro controller will be rechargeable via a usb cable.

Which makes sense since we saw the Wiiu gamepad connected to a similar cable at the E3 conference.

Honestly, the controller with a screen is my biggest turn off from the WiiU. That thing isn’t going to be cheap, so I’m glad Nintendo has a cheaper alternative. Use the Pro controller that came with your WiiU, buy some gamepads for when friends come over.

I’m still not excited about potentially having to buy a bunch of Wiimotes to go with a WiiU.

I’m still waiting to make up my mind on getting a WiiU. The plain gamepad makes me more likely to get one, but I need more information before deciding.

Edit: I didn’t watch Nintendo’s press conference, so accidentally swapped the names of the controllers. Oh well.

The WiiU comes with the touch screen GamePad, so it doesn’t become an optional peripheral, but instead an integral part of the WiiU experience. Plus, it doesn’t look bigger than a Nook tablet anyways. They just keep putting it in small hands, so it looks huge.

Nintendo likes doing things different, whether it’s ahold idea, or not. Usually, it doesn’t they don’t turn out half bad. If you don’t Wii remotes (which I don’t see how that could be a bad) the new Pro controller is an excellent alternative, if not an unoriginal one.

With that being said, Nintendo’s press conference was rather disappointing. I was hoping for more I didn’t already know about. NintendoLand was cool, in a mini-game collection kind of way, but they should have closed with something bigger and more exciting.
