Why does Barney owe Gordon a beer?

I’ve played all the games except Blue Shift and Decay, and I don’t remember Barney ever saying anything to Gordon about beer ever.

It’s a subtle reference to security guards saying “hey catch me later I’ll buy you a beer” before the resonance cascade in HL1.

Play Half-Life 1, bug the hell out of A Barney with the use button, and you will understand. I believe the one Barney that opens the door for you after the tram ride says “Hey catch me later and i’ll buy you a beer” after he opens the door.
