Which Game/Engine do you feel has the nicest movement system?

Obviously different games and engines have different feeling to how you maneuver the world you are in. Which game do you think feels the nicest to move around in? State your reasons why you feel as you do.

For example, I find Half Life 2 to be the best, and I think it is the crouch jumping and ability to hang on 2 inch ledges that does it. It makes you feel incredibly mobile and not having any legs gives you the wonderful illusion that you are actually running and jumping through the world, unlike left 4 dead and similar when you stand on a precipice and you’re doing the floating splits above it rather than actually balancing on it.

I liked UT99 because you felt heavy and the ground seemed wonderfully solid, in complete contrast to UT2004 where the entire world felt like one giant bouncy castle. Assassin’s creed had nearly limitless mobility, and yet could feel very restricted in some circumstances. Same with Mirror’s edge, which is why I like Half Life 2 better, personally.

Quake and Half-Life 1 and 2, Unreal 1 and UT99. FEAR 1 had a surprising amount of control for having a full-body awareness system, but that could be because they structured everything around looking and acting like a traditional first-person game rather then just sticking a camera on a model. Halo was a bit similar in the later games.

Also Thief felt like you had a lot of control, also because of mantling (especially the dark mod)

Zone of the Enders had amazing six-degree-of-freedom robot movement control. Assassin’s Creed games also have wonderful movement control with a great degree of freedom for climbing buildings seamlessly.

Fallout/Skyrim for worst and least comfortable movement. Gonna have to say that Source takes the cake. Everything is just so perfectly responsive, even in clunky-ass black mesa. It’s all based on simple variables so it’s as good as you make it

Quake and therefore source and COD

Unreal Engine and Source Engine with Brothers In Arms: Hells Highway and Half Life 2 respectively.

Sly cooper and therefore InFamous

Oh yeah, fucking Max Payne 1 and 2. 3 looked good but there were too many times where Euphoria betrayed me and made me do some shit that got me killed. It seems the more advanced and realistic looking your animation system is, the worse it is to play. Like, eh… The transition from Uncharted 2 to 3. UC2 was snappier and UC3 is realistic and sluggish.

Source -> Basically all games, for general movement, sprint, etc.
Unreal -> Dishonored, for it’s high level of mobility and climbing.
Creation/Gamebryo [Bethesda] -> Good for slow paced games, though that’s a niche.

recently started playing skyrim, i was surprised by how clunky it feels

I hit uninstall button on Skyrim after 15 minutes.

Is it really not possible to completely overhaul Bethesda’s engine without breaking mod support or something?

Idk what their issue is. They should just buy a license for another engine and re-build their stuff. It will take a long time and a lot of money, but their games won’t feel and look like shit as a result.

If only you could buy a license to use Rockstar’s engine…

I’m still enjoying it despite the clunky movement and some of the weird bugs and annoyances though.
The thing that annoyed me the most was the control system which is obviously based on the console version, which means there’s none of the advantages of mouse/kb controls.
But I got used to it pretty quickly though.

For FPS, I’d have to go with Quake Live. They found a nice middle ground between all the Quake games that just feels really, really good. I also love the movement in Thief because it’s simulated; Garrett’s camera is attached to a rolling block that is affected by the physics of the world. It gives you an extra little bit of “there-ness” that’s missing from most games.

Also, Dishonored deserves an honorable mention. The controls and feel are just super tight.

The Max Payne and Alan Wake engine is pretty cool. Thief’s engine as well, which kind of carries over to Dishonored despite it being on a different engine. Thief is better though. I think it’s got the best first person camera bobbing of what I’ve played.

I was playing Thief yesterday and got caught by guards. I couldn’t shake them so I just kept running until I saw a window. I was like “I’m going to jump through that window” and jumped and mantled up through it. I fell and died afterwards but just being able to do that at all while running from guards was pretty cool.

Source engine and whatever Ubisoft used for Rainbow 6 Las Vegas 1 and 2

Unreal Engine 3. :stuck_out_tongue:

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
