What's the closest you've come to death?

S’all in the title. I figured some of us might have some interesting shit to say with this question.

For me, I can’t say that to my knowledge I’ve been very close to death.

When I was 8, I choked with some chicken and wasn’t able to breathe for what seemed like an eternity. my dad grabbed me by the legs and shaked me until the food got out of the way.

5 minutes later, a piece of chicken came out of my nose.

I was bored one day and I deciding I would try to get on to the roof of my house. I finally managed to get up there and as I was walking around I tripped. I fell straight forward and rolled until I my body fell off the roof, but I managed to grab on to the gutters (to which my surprise they didnt break, especially for how much I weigh) and pull myself back up (which is almost even more surprising) and after that I cried for like 30 minutes, because I was so terrified.

I can tell when I died in an alternate universe. There is a slight skip in my perception of things around me. I have died in many car crashes, and been murdered when getting caught up in someone else’s dispute.

But the closest I have come to death was during one of two surgeries (forgot which) where they had trouble keeping my bleeding under control. I’m not a hemophiliac, but I’m about halfway between that and normal.

Hitting my head on a dresser drawer after trying to climb on it. I was bleeding pretty badly but I don’t think I was really anywhere close to dying.

The closest I’ve come to dieing was during a snowboard trip. I was going WAY too fast, hit a jump, did a flip, and then landed on my back on top of a boulder. I had broken my back in seven places with a slight concussion. If I had not worn a helmet my head would have split like a melon.

That sounds pretty brutal. :fffuuu:

You should have done a flip.

I did.

Well, you should’ve done two, damnit. >.>

Once I got into a car accident where I passed a parked van on the side of the road at the top of a hill, and had a car coming at me at 40 mph that I didn’t see until I was over the hill and I was halfway into its lane. I swerved and barely missed the car coming at me, and hit the parked van instead. Much better than hitting a car coming head-on.

More recently, I was surfing and fell off and got thrashed about by a wave. As soon as I brought my head back up the surfboard was looming directly above me and fell on top of me. It was a 9 foot longboard, so it was pretty heavy, and the fin hit me straight in the head. I’m really lucky it didn’t break my skull. I got 9 staples.

Closest I came was almost falling into a cesspool. We were in my friend’s backyard, and someone claimed the ground was sinking in a certain place. I, being the genius I am, decided to test this be stomping down on said location. Ground gave way, I slid in, and only by the grace of god did I hold onto the solid ground surrounding the hole. Pulled myself back up and looked down, seeing that if I had fell, I would have slammed into concrete then slid through some narrow passages to my doom.

damn near fell into a big ol cow sewage pond in the winter, what a way to go

This one time I herped while I derped which almost cost me my life.

Outside my math class wth a sharpened screwdriver in 8th grade. A friend of mine came and talked me out of it before I did anything though.

Last summer I was Jaywalking and got clotheslined by a speeding sedan, luckily I didn’t go completely underneath or come into contact with the tires. I grabbed onto the bumper to save my head from hitting the concrete.

I walked away with only a scrape, and the dude’s license plate was bent beyond recognition.

During my Christmas exams in my third year of high school, my brother drove me to school early in the morning. It had snowed the day before (which had now turned into thin layers of ice).

Anyway, at one point we get to a crossroad, red lights, so obviously we stopped and on the lane next to us, a truck stops. Lights turn green and my brother steps on it so he would get in front of the truck, the truck driver saw this and decided to slow down a bit and get on our lane just behind us, but instead of getting behind us, he gently touches the back of our car. Our car starts spinning like crazy, gets hit by another car, we flip upside down and keep sliding into a ditch that was filled with water and ice.

I had tried to brace myself by putting my feet against the back of passenger area, which was a bad idea since I ripped my articular ligaments. Because of that, I couldn’t move at all (seeing as the roof had caved in as well). My brother was shocked/stunned and in massive panic (but he was okay, apart from a whiplash) and didn’t know what to do… While I was in the ice cold water. Someone who saw it happen stopped and called an ambulance, by the time they got there, I was nearly unconscious (the guy who saw it and my brother managed to get me out of the car, thank god… But I was still freezing).

Didn’t we have a thread like this in the past?

Accidental electrocution and being hit by a car while bicycling are my two closest ones. There was also one time when a game of football was played on a sheet of ice that didn’t end well either, but that’s more of a mild concussion than a near-death thing.

i was drunk in a new town on new years eve and got lost. i guess my toxic tongue got me into a fight and i ended up with a blood covered face in the ER. you never know how far such depravity can go.

Closest I’ve ever been was falling off the back of a zodiac in high winds, My head missed the full-throttle outboard motor by about 3 inches.

I stood upright for an unknown period of time on the bottom of a pool’s shallow end around age 3 or 4, from which I was pulled by my mother who returned outside to find me in that condition.
