What's cannonic and what's not?

I’ve seen people claiming that some expansions are not canonical(Opossing Force per example) Well, I would like to know what is really canon and what not.

Is Blue Shift canon? And Decay?

nope and nope

The Half-Life wiki is a relatively safe route.

Nihao.

Yes. Its canonic for me
Unfortunately, Guard Duty is dead. So I play goldsrc version .

Ok, the short answer is that anything NOT made by Valve is NOT canonical UNLESS Valve references/makes use of it in the future. You can check here for some quotes from Marc Laidlaw on the topic.

However, like acade’s post mentions, it’d just be easier not to worry about it. They’re just games and they’re made by humans, who my research says make lots of mistakes. So you could end up puzzling over what some little thing means for days or months or years and then it could turn out to be just an oversight. Best just to recite the MST3K mantra and be on with your life.

they are cannon and all who disagrees can have tight contact with my balls

How about we call it all cannon and be done? then we have a nice fleshed out story which most games “forget” to add, also I have read the story over and over again and I see no conflicts so I say it is safe to say it’s all official until we are told it’s not. happy =/

Well, I read in Black Mesa’s Wiki that Barney Calhoun would appear in the same place he does in Blue Shift, this meaning that for the devs Blue Shift is canonical.

Actually, that means that the devs are giving a nod to Blue Shift.

I seem to remember a quote by Marc Laidlaw which states that Gearbox created new enemies and scenarios because they had to in order to make a good game, and that Valve largely let them get to it without involving themselves. The only place Valve intervened, he went on, was in the nuking of Black Mesa, as there was a lot of pressure on Valve to return to Black Mesa in Half-Life 2, and that would have been “creative death.” So, to Valve, only the nuking of Black Mesa is canonical.

And the thing with Barney, we won’t get to see him when Gordon is being dragged along the hallway by the HECU, but we will get to see him on the platform during Inbound. With Half-Life 2, Valve made that Barney “the” Barney, by giving him the same last name.

Not really, though.

Somewhere at the russian forums was message, that GD has been closed.

It might be a pretty cool to find a proof, that I’m wrong <_<

However, once Black Mesa is finished, it would be a lot easier to make a Blue Shift remake using stuff from it, obviously if the devs allow you to.

They will. They’re releasing FGDs that will allow BM’s content to be useable in Hammer, and some even want to release all of BM’s source code.

We can argue about Canon until the cows come home (which is never, because we don’t have any) but my personal view of HL canon goes as follows:
HL is canon. (Except for the choice of model for Doctor Kleiner; he should be one of the Walter/Glasses scientists, not one of the Einstein scientists)
Adrian Shepard and some of his adventures are canon. Race X, seeing Freeman, and the barnacle grappling hook are not.
Blue shift is canon. (Doctor Rosenberg’s whereabouts are unknown)
Decay is again partially canon. I don’t think there was a chamber under the test chamber, and the hazard course is a bit off if you compare it to Op4, but most of the events seem to match up fairly well.

I currently am tied to your balls and have no intention of untying myself. <3

you sir, could not be more wrong… and need to learn how to use google

ORLY? Last news message was on Jul 24th, 2011. So it can be already closed.

You also need to learn how to read peoples signatures. Here, I’ll help you out.

EVILGOODGUY IS A LEVEL DESIGNER FOR GUARD DUTY! YOU’D THINK HE MIGHT KNOW WHETHER IT IS DEAD OR NOT!

In spite of that, media was released on the 18th of August, little under 2 months ago…

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
