So how did Valve came up with such a story for the Half-Life games? A question that I have been wondering all the time. Discuss
Marc Laidlaw

Not quite “/thread”. Valve were inspired by Doom, Quake, Resident Evil, a novella by Stephen King called The Mist and an episode of The Outer Limits entitled “The Borderland”. They had a large portion of the plot outline already when they hired Marc Laidlaw to put a bit of narrative and structure to it.
Ok now it’s /thread
Better
Wasn’t one of those movies that had parasites that would cling to your head an idea for the headcrab?
Halo
Oh wait…
^You’re thinking of Aliens
Damn man is this really all we have left to talk about in the Half-Life series thread?
This was in their heads:
Case solved.
The idea for the headcrabs comes from the Alien movies
How can you not know the name of the series?
Valve only wanted to create a quick and cheap game to pay their gambling bills and Gabe’s addiction to exotic hookers. Turns out they’re so talented that they still created a pure gem of a game even without trying too much.
Now you can imagine what would have come out if they had actually made more of an effort.
So bscly, Half-Life is a pile of shit
What ever floats your boat… what ever lowers your moon… what ever rises your sun… what ever gets your groove on.
HL was going to be a B-game, so they made a story that would work in a B-game. Then they played it, realized it was no fun, rebuilt almost everything, re-wrote some stuff to fit the new design, and released it, and it was so awesome it was a AAA title.
yep, since our gman thread died and valve don’t give new updates
It’s amazing how much the design has changed. It’s gone from a complete joke to totally serious. Looking at very early screenshots shows how over-the-top it was (scarred and disturbed looking ‘mad’ scientists, eyes-wide-with-terror military policemen, muscular cigar smoking soldiers with handheld miniguns, etc). And the early concept are gets even weirder, the original human enemies come to mind:
Special Unit / CIA Soldier aka “The Butcher”: A man in heavy metal armour with circular saws for hands.
Special Weapons / CIA Assassin: A man in light metal armour with a sniper-machinegun and what appears to be a belt of throwing knives.
Special Attack / Psionic Soldier aka “Brainboy”: A short man with a large head that is hooked up to a “thought cannon”.
Light Attack: Female CIA Soldier: A tall thin woman with large breasts wearing a skimpy outfit and wielding a Machine-pistol. (And the only surviving concept, being recreated as the Female Assassin)
Well, i think they were just driving in a car; going to work once again, and just had a bright idea…
