What to do before release, so the internet doesn't die.

Just as the title suggests, we should think of a way to get the game out to a lot of people before/while ModDb, Black Mesa, File planet and all other download locations crash.

maybe 48 hours before release, the BM team gives the top most trusted Forum members (the guys who have been here the longest) a torrent and they can seed to the rest of the forum members once the release date is reached. once that happens, they can seed for everybody else.

any better ideas?

Sounds like a good idea to me! More people finished downloading=faster for everyone else.

nice try

He’s not trying anything, he said some of the forum dwellers that have been here the longest, which isn’t him. Also, I was thinking maybe the mods could torrent it first, because the devs can trust them, and they deserve it for their services on the forums over time.

By the time Black Mesa gets released there won’t be an internet as we know it, we will all be joined with an interconnected neurotic system, transferring data at the maximum speed our mind will allow us to think.

So no worries.

Make it steam down loadable, and no other game is available for download for a month.

Don’t think that any server will crash because the average download server can take from 750 people up to 1000 people to upload to.
And these servers will give a warning message if more people will try to download.

Don’t think there’s a way of knowing who’s been here the longest. Some people are quiet souls, while others match my post count in about a day with irrelevant rubbish

Also, wouldn’t you get hundreds of people suddenly sign up to the forum?

Tis a nice idea though, but I’m cool with waiting a couple of days til the rush dies down

It would be more than a couple of days.

…government agencies worldwide are desperately trying to calm the mass hysteria over newly-released game modification Black Mesa… details are unclear and are flooding in as we speak, but what IS clear is that nobody is safe from the unrelenting mobs on the streets outside… unless you want your computer raided for a copy of the game downloaded before the internet crashed, we recommend that you lock your doors… do not call 911, we repeat, do NOT call 911. All officers are currently occupied…

neurotic indeed

anyway, considering the current global internet hype over the mod, i wouldn’t really be worried about finding large bandwidth torrent seeds and mirrors

Why not, I’m okay with Deutscher Scharfschütze’s idea.

Good idea is good.

There won’t be a problem with download servers until about a week after release. I doubt even I’ll hear about it until then, unless I continue lurking here every day at that point.

So now you what to do this year : lurk in the shadow of Ram :terror:

I rather like the idea, but have it encrypted for them until the release date. Kind of like the steam preload system, but with torrents. An ideal release would have Valve step in just before the mod is complete and offer to release it on steam alongside the devs web release. They already host top mods on steam, and it’s pretty obvious that BM is going to be a top mod.

There should be plenty of devs, each with their own working copy of the final product once it’s done. They could all easily just pick one day, each pull the name of a different mirror out of a hat, send a quick email to their chosen mirror to let them know they should expect some heavy load cause black mesa is finished and then each one sends off to said mirror all at once.

Also, yeah, just send VALVE the first finished release before anyone else gets it, give them a 1-4 weeks to play it and give feedback while the devs do one final intense bug check/scrub and then Valve can release it on steam. Once it shows up there, then the devs all send off to their respective mirrors.

You can’t stop it. No precautions can be taken. The internet will be killed when Black Mesa is released!

the the devs and mods know who have been here the longest. They know who was there during the gamernode era, or even the leak free era. It would be all up to their discretion anyways.

I wish I was here during leak free :frowning: Even though I don’t know what it is…

I was, but I never registered until after that.

Doesn’t change much, I never posted until a few months after the official trailer was released.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
