So I tried to start up Steam just now, it gave me the update bar, then all of a sudden it goes away and says it deleted the .exe but the “files are still there”.
Huh?
Why the fuck did it do that?

because.
steam is awesome. you should just love steam man, valve didnt work on it for nothing. besides, I have no problems, so that must mean steam is really a great program.
So is Steam.exe gone or something?
GASP! A product of incredible complexity experiences the occasional bizarre error! ALERT THE PRESSES!! BOYCOTT THE OPPRESSORS!!!
try downloading a new installer. It won’t delete your games.
please tell me exactly what the error message says, it could be the primitive AI your computer has developed saving you from losing your important data
bring back won!!! lol
Does steam sill run after that happens. Do you get the error still? The “files are still there”?
If the .exe is sill there run the steam.exe out of the main folder.
Steam does fuck around sometimes. After an update it stopped working for me and I couldn’t be bothered to mess with it so I just played my non-stem games. Then a couple of days later another update and voila, it’s working again. Go figure.
I do think you might have to reinstall it though…
Don’t you miss the good old days of having actual games with an actual icon that linked to an actual .exe and you would not have to worry about it stopping to work randomly and getting updated with something that you didn’t even agree to?
I like the idea of Steam but I hate that each time I want to play a game, I have to wait until it downloads updates to Steam. And that it complains if I don’t have an internet connection: I don’t need an internet connection to play Half-Life 2, so wtf?
No, I don’t.
I do and dont, its great, I can be lazy as hell, let steam do all the work.
you know that you can deactivate automatic updates, dont you?
Doesn’t he actually have to be able to get onto steam to do that first?
you can install steam games from a CD, you can extract steam games and play them without steam, you can run steam without access to the internet, steam can access the internet even if your ISP has suspended your connection due to non-payment… what more can you ask for?
but he is complaining as in a general situation, not in this particular occasion. either way, he could’ve set the no updates options before this time.
You should spank Steam, it has been bad.
Steam shouldn’t have deleted the steam.exe file if it was in use. If it did, reinstall. If at least steam.exe is there, delete everything but that and the steamapps folder and run steam.exe and let it update
It’s an anti-Steam virus, sent from the guys at the WON2 site.
Yeah, steam is a real b**** sometimes, but ya gotta love it.
Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
