What makes a game "scary" to you?

when theres a lot of heights and a lot of precise jumps in those high areas (I have acrophobia)

Doom 3,Resident Evil 3,Bioshock,Dead Space 2,World of Warcraft  just kidding
oh and Black Mesa! Its scary as shit

Jesus Christ, don’t get me started on Black Mesa…

While the monsters of games like Amnesia and Silent Hill are very effective, I’ve always wanted to see some sort of “realistic” thing to be afraid of. Psychonauts’ ending had two moments in which you’re fighting a demonic version of your father figure, and it’s pretty terrifying in a way to hear things like “Don’t run! Or else daddy’s gonna KILL ya!”

For instance, being locked inside a large, unlit mansion with an injured, furious, drunk man holding a loud gun, while playing as an 11-year-old kid. Plus, one shot kills you but they’re easy to dodge. So you would run around trying to hide from him, while he spews violent and loud threats at you, constantly lumbering after you. The moment he yells “GOTCHA, YOU LITTLE SHIT!” you have about a half-second to get behind something before he shoots, kills you, and you have to start over.

Other people haven’t been so convinced, but I think if a storyline added up to that moment it would be pretty hard-hitting.

When you’re being chased. When you hear, or feel something running right behind your back, but you’re too scared to turn around.

when you’re being chased and can’t fight

Subtle noises and then a transition into total silence creeps me out. Also not being able to always see who is after you.

And for the guy who likes Silent hill 2 you might like this, Its only a demo and it has some bug’s. It runs on the UDK engine. Has potential though…

^ This. Computer games also have that unintentional side-effect of not being able to see what is chasing you because the mouse controls the direction you move, so looking behind you means having to run backwards.

I think one of Valve’s employees had the right idea when he spoke of creating the zombies in HL2’s Raising the Bar - saying that having a big monster with large teeth that jumps at you is scary, but only the first time.

But having something that is innately human, something grotesque and truly disgusting is far more horrifying, and stays with you for a long time.

I think for me, sound makes up 90% of the fear, at least in a game. You show me a picture of even the scariest monster, and I won’t blink an eye. A blood curdling scream however, immediately sets me on edge.

Few games get this right, however. Even in Stalker, they went down the right road, but not far enough. What you need are terrifying ambient noises, ranging from the loudest noise coming a mile away, to the smallest footstep or foliage rustle right behind you. Often it’s the small, quiet ones that people overlook.

When a game has you incapable of knowing the difference between a monster lurking in the shadows and an ambient noise, they’ve done it right. The same can be said when you’re terrified and it’s a bright, clear sunny day. Games rely too much on their built environment to scare players. Fear should be more spontaneous than that.

Yeah, I can usually tell the difference between ambiance and enemy sound, and I can always tell when a scary scripted event will occur because of level design. Main reason games usually don’t scary me.

The part in Condemned with the mannequins scared me so bad when I tried to play it. I was like 10, it was too much lol, I quit the game and haven’t finished it since. Is it worth going back to and playing?

That game was so underrated. So yes go back and play it…

I agree with you. I discovered Silent Hill 2 only 2 years ago, and despite the aging graphics… it gave me the chills and goosebumps when I played with it. It’s definetly among the all time best horror adventure games.

Doom 3 is like walking in the (metal) park next to it. So far only Amnesia: The Dark Descent could reach SH 2’s level on this matter I say.

Yes, play and finish that game. Scariest game I played purely on AI alone.

The second game…not AS good, but still worth the price of admission if only because [spoilers][COLOR=‘Black’]there’s a HUGE FUCKING BEAR CHASE THROUGH AN ABANDONED CABIN[/spoilers].

Any game related to the Call of Duty series scares me.

What games are you talking about? Rule of the Rose?

This scene? Don’t watch if you’re easily freaked out.

It’s probably not considering the scene sounds different than you interpreted, but It just so reminded me of that.

Nosferatu: Wrath of Malachi
simple game, big fear :open_mouth:

“Stole from Zero Puncuation”

Why yes, yes it is. its a good example of horror games.

Damn I remember that game…Also clive barker undying, way better than the newest clive barker

Also, all the “chasing with no gun or no way to defend myself” didn’t start with amnesia…neither with penumbra black plague…I think the first of its kind was Clock tower for Snes

I like when the monsters are reorganized people, like in silent hill or amnesia. those are truly disturbing once you get past the initial sexual attraction.

Necromorphs would fit in here, but they’re just plain shocking. You get over 'em instantly.

Whats the newest Clive Barker game? Jericho? - I loved its cinematic trailer, and the girls of that psychotic Jericho Squad… but the 0 Ai, the restrictions of movement (no jumping) and the repetitive gameplay killed it soon enough.
