Weird weapon menu navigation

Did anyone else find the weapon selection kind of bothersome? I really hate how it sort of saves your place in the weapon menu. I’m so used to pressing 3 once for the SMG, twice for the shotgun, and three times for the crossbow. Same sort of thing for the other weapon slots.

But now I can’t do that, because if I’m using, say, the shotgun, and I want to switch to my SMG, I have to press 3 twice to get past the crossbow, then get to the SMG. It’s kind of a huge pain having to remember exactly what position I am in the weapon menu to know how many times I have to press the weapon slot number in order to use the weapon I want. Especially in the heat of battle.

Has this bothered anyone else?

Yeah, it kept getting me throughout the whole game. Really annoying, but it didn’t really ruin the whole experience. Well, maybe when I would switch to the wrong gun in a heated firefight, but that’s about it.

Yeah, it definitely didn’t ruin the game or anything. But it did give me this weird sense of discomfort.

Yeah, same here. I kept selecting the wrong weapon because I wasn’t used to it. IMO it should have the same mechanics as HL2 ^^

It was annoying at first, but then I’ve started to adapt to it. Now it feels weird to press 2 twice just to get my magnum out in HL2! D:

The older design is alot easier to navigate that’s for sure but the current design isn’t too bad I’d rather they concentrate on fixing up the bugs in the mod first.

Same here… It felt strange in the beginning but after a while you get used to it.
But nevertheless - would it be a big effort maybe to make the “old” system optional? I still prefer how it used to be in aaaaall the other Half-Life related games

Wow, I didn’t even notice. Now the next time I fire it up I’m gonna be thinking about that and it’s gonna throw me off.

umm…you just learn to adapt.
Seriously. You stand in a peaceful place for 5 minutes and you tab through your weapons with the number keys until you get the hang of which gun is which. Problem solved. How are you incapable of doing something so simple?

Jeez. Should the devs customize the game specifically to your needs?

[COLOR=‘DarkOrange’]There’s no need to go on full rage mode.

quick weapon switch + mouse wheel up/mouse wheel down for next/previous weapon simplifies things alot. I also bound weapon slot 3 to my mouse wheel button.

With the number of complaints Ive seen regarding controls, I feel like creating a thread highlighting my entire keyboard and mouse configuration. Some people do not know how to customize controls effectively.

Hey, I’m not saying it’s difficult or anything. I did get used to it quite quickly. All I’m saying is that I’d prefer it to be the same as in other HL games, simply for continuity’s sake.

It’s not a huge problem until you’re trying to switch weapons on the fly while you’re being attacked, when I fired up EP2 this week I snapped back to the old mechanic straight away, maybe an option for “suit memory” would be cool.

Well, that was kind of unnecessary.

I was trying to find a console command / CVar you could use, but I didn’t find anything - the only way I can think of, to make this work, would be to create and execute an uberly complicated slot script or something along those lines.

Other than that, I am out of ideas, for now.

It’s not an issue for me, I do better have an option for a “fast crowbar/grenade” without the “q-previous weapon key” registering it, so I can easily switch and use 4 weapons at once.

It’s not about not being able to handle change. I genuinely think the weapon switch system was better in the other HL games. It is so much easier when the number of times you have to press a number in order to switch to another weapon is always the same. If it always varies, then things get confusing in the heat of battle. Not to mention that it’s also different when you don’t have all of the weapons yet. Memorization of where the weapons are simply doesn’t work when it’s different based on what weapon you’re currently using or how many you have.

[COLOR=‘DarkOrange’]Edited to stay on topic.

You could always just flick your eyes up to the corner and look for 3 quarters of a second. Or press a different slot key first and then click use the proper one. Or hit the slot key and use the mouse wheel. It doesn’t take long to get used to this minor change.

i did feel uncomfortable with that too
the weapon select should always scroll from top to bottom, not scroll relative to the drawn weapon

but i guess modifying a script would fix it, i just need to know which

this problem can easily be adressed via a tweaking of scripts, just wait for somone to make that happen in the test chamber forums

True, there are ways to get around it. But honestly, if you really need to put effort into “getting around” a feature/change in the game, then it probably shouldn’t be there in the first place IMO.

And really, it’s a completely pointless change. I’ve already mentioned how it messes with your muscle memory and will probably cause many people to screw up and fire the wrong weapon. And why shouldn’t it be consistent with the rest of the series anyway? People who play Half-Life games are by now used to the usual way of switching weapons, so there is no reason to change it.

Yeah, I agree. It didn’t need to happen. It’d be nice if there was an option to have the old style of switching weapons.

It screws with your muscle memory. The good thing about HL1/2 style switching is that you memorize - press 3 twice for the Shotgun, no matter what. In the heat of a fight if I want to pull out the Shotgun I don’t even have to think about it, just press 3 twice. Bam. Sorted. It’s in my mind forever. No matter what I can always pull out the Shotgun.

Current system, well. It doesn’t work well. If I have the MP5, I have to press it once only. And seeing as one of the most common switches between weapons for me was the MP5 and Shotgun, it screwed me royally many times. Then to put the MP5 back on I’d have to press it twice? Sometimes twice, sometimes once? It requires thinking there and then on the spot about how many key presses are needed, which not only takes you out of the moment but wastes a precious second. Maybe it works for some people, I dunno, but I would have been a helluva lot happier if there was an option for the old style of weapon switching. I can’t tell you the number of times mid fight I’d put on the same weapon I’m already carrying because I pressed it one time too few. Not nice, and not really necessary.

Also, Dr. Karamazov, we’re not complaining about it solely because it’s different. That would be stupid. We’re complaining because it is a counter-intuitive, and fairly unnecessary change to something which was never broke in the first place. Change things, by all means, but why change them for the worse? Perhaps some people, such as yourself, like it, that’s fine. I don’t. I’m allowed to not like it, and I’m allowed to moan about it. At least it’s constructive.
