Vindictus

Writing this is difficult, as it involves convincing people that a recent Free-To-Play Korean MMO that’s in Open Beta is actually somehow fun.
https://www.vindictus.com

Here’s the basics.
-The game is made in the Source Engine (to the dumb: The one used for HL2, TF2, BM, etc), but doesn’t have shitty load times.
-The “massive” part is not so true. You start off in a small town that has individual “channels” (servers with their own group of people). From there, you head out to a dungeon in a max party of 4 (or more in special events called Raids)
-It takes advantage of Source by having complete destructive physics in the instance-dungeons. The best part is; you can use them as weapons. One of the most effective ways of killing bosses is to destroy a pillar, grab a resulting rock, and smash his face in. There are also hookshots you can use to pull a boss down by a limb, etc
-Combat is more like a hack-and-slash game than any WoW clone; rather than a list of abilities you set to keybinds, you remember simple combos like “strike, strike, strike, smash smash”
-No magic as of yet
-You are restricted to a set of 4 to 6 items when in a dungeon; a throwable weapon, and three potion-esque items. This is a nice way of preventing you from losing too much on one fight.
-Most of your stat increases come from a special form of achievements called “Titles”. Basically, they are character attributes that let you put a title above your character’s name, such as “The gnollslayer”. However, unlocking one, whether or not you use it, also grants stat bonuses to your character.
-Crafting is available by taking random items from the dungeon to shopkeepers who have an appropriate pattern (players themselves don’t learn crafting skills)

Here’s what I like about the game so far.
-It is very good about introducing mechanics to you one at a time. The introductory level is played solo, and reduces the HUD to minimum items; no stamina bar, no armor management, etc. From then on, things you need to know are introduced over time as you go through the first region of the game; and you won’t lose out by not knowing them earlier.
-Combat is actually fun. You will, unfortunately, need to redo previous dungeons over several times, but it remains entertaining. You actually have a number of moves available, such as grabbing and throwing enemies, grabbing and throwing objects at enemies, using large objects as handheld weapons, or just attacking with your own sword. Any of these will work pretty well. (If you have played Dead Rising 2, it may feel familiar)
-The main difference between the two classes available (as it’s a beta) is that one defends by dodging attacks, the other defends by either dodging (not as well) or shielding them. Also one is a girl, for which you can customize the size of her boobs to “large” or “unduly large” (it’s a Korean MMO, what do you expect?)

Sounds interesting, I may have to give it a try. Saw your video about how there’s no dance command lol

Always willing to give free games a shot, i’ll see how it goes.

I stopped reading at ‘‘free Korean MMO’’.

Fuck those grindfests.

Well I’m in game and clicked start game but it says try again after logging into site, i am logged into site.

Deimos: Alternately, find the EXE in program files, open that, and then enter account details once ingame.

Maxey: Yeah, I’d be just as suspicious. As long as the combat is fun though, and that’s what you play for, you may as well call TF2 a hat grind-fest.

Hmm, found it and logged in in the game, still tells me to try again after signing into website, what a pain.

Downloading this now… hopefully I’ll enjoy it, registration was a pain with me having to settle for something rather un-doorlike.

What server do y’all play on?

pff US and Canada only
bullcrap :meh:

They wont let me log in. :frowning:

looks good, downloading

That should explain why I’m having issues!

Completely forgot that it’s US/Canada only.

I play on East. My clan tends to Channel 31 (you can select in the upper right) but that isn’t the same as “servers” in the general convention. It just determines the people you see in-town.

Never thought I’d say this, but I think I’ve found a Nexon game that is actually fun without having to use their real-money-item-shop bullshit. (I’m looking at you, Maple Story!)

Pretty good.

They are pretty sly about it though…
Your character’s basic undergarments consist of faded long-johns. If you pay money, you get much more revealing underwear.
Further compounded by the fact that the game features armor damage during combat. (even has a bit of cloth physics from the ripped shreds)

The U.S. is the world, anyone outside of it is a minority. :retard:

The game is very fun. The most in-depth combat system I have played in an MMO. The most fun you will get with it is the finishing/grabbing attacks; they are contact sensitive. Say you grab an enemy, you can scoot him over and piledrive him into a pile of clay pots or smash his back into a stone piller and kick him through it, causing in to crumble on top of him. Very fun, cloth physics and destructible environment, and with every Korean MMO there are jiggly boobs. :stuck_out_tongue:

The beginning with the cutscenes sucked but the game itself is awesome! The text dialog with the art is much nicer, IMO. Anyone on it right now? I’m a level 3 and would like to change that.

EDIT: Also, I tried to link it to my Steam library and it said “unauthorized program detected, you will be disconnected from the game.” :frowning:

Well, it was fun while I could play it. I beat the little intro with the tower and the spider, but when I got into town and went to the mercenary shop, I started talking to Ceara and suddenly I got a stuttering crash with brown vertical lines on my screen, and I had to restart my computer. I tried running Vindictus again and this time, I went from the inn to the Mercenary outpost and then, while trying to go to the docks, it crashed again, only with a black screen instead of lines. No clue what’s going on, hopefully it’s just a glitch or compatability error that needs to be ironed out, and not something wrong with my GPU. I’m thinking it’s the former since I haven’t had any trouble playing games until I tried playing this one. If anyone has any insight into this issue let me know, I will try doing some research myself before I try playing again.
