If there’s one reason to purge society of all that is unclean, it’s the term “veggies”.

I’m all for beef, pork and chicken. I dislike any “wild meat” (you know, animals killed by hunt), not because of the “oh noes cruel” stuff, but just because it tastes shit. I also munch with a lot of vegetables and/or fruit (I only really hate cucumbers).
I respect vegetarians, I absolutely despise vegans.
The problem with the vegan path is that the only logical conclusion is to kill yourself.
I am a vegetarian. Whoever wants to know “reasons for being a vegetarian” can google it. There are tons of info about it on the internet.
I still consume milk and eggs, I just don’t eat slaughtered animals, birds or fish. Any nutrition that a good steak can give you can easily be replaced by vegetarian alternatives, so I see no need to eat meat. I feel healthier with it, and after I tried to return to meat-eating once and ended up feeling very unhealthy from it, I am confident that my choice was right.
I think vegans go too far in their quest for righteousness. It’s not about the ethics for me - it’s about feeling well with what I eat, and also about sparing the environment a little. With every consumer that stops eating meat, the overall need for meat in the society decreases a tiny little bit. With the decrease of need, the decrease of supply goes. The less meat production there is on earth, the better for our environment and - ultimately - the people that live on this planet.
I don’t go around playing “vegetarian missionary”, though, 'cause I hate militant do-gooders of any kind. The information on the worldwide benefits of vegetarianism is available, is discussed on TV and the Internet full and wide, is in our bookstores and libraries.
If people choose to ignore it, you cannot force them. They are by definition leading an ignorant lifestyle on the expense of others (unless they only eat eco meat & fish, of course - there is nothing wrong with that), but they are doing so in a free society where they have the right to do so.
I don’t like it, of course - but then, I also don’t like people to be religious. However, the vast majority of people on Earth still is. I won’t change that by simply being an Atheist or even advocating Atheism wherever I go.
I’ll just make myself a lot of enemies.
That’s not what I want. So I don’t do it. You don’t have to agree with people’s lifestyles to be friends with them.
Winged One:
Fact, average meat consumption has gone down in the past few decades. I guess all those people becoming vegetarians are doing it for nothing huh?
The argument of “we were intended to eat meat” is invalid. We are omnivores intended to eat whatever our environment offers us.
At this point in time in the Western world, we can easily survive healthily without meat.
You also seem to think that not eating meat makes no difference? It certainly does. If you stop eating meat, you might inspire others (not forcibly, of course) to do the same. You can raise your children to become vegetarians.
In any case, the “one person doesn’t make a difference” mentality is stupid, because it’s never just one person.
The production of meat in the Western world is extremely unethical, and has very unhealthy consequences for meat consumers.
There are a lot of good reasons not to eat meat, and very few reasons, good or bad, to eat meat.
That being said, I’m not a vegetarian, because I don’t want to push that on my mother and my sister. When I cook I’ll probably cook something vegetarian, and when I go out I’ll order something vegetarian, but whenever someone else cooks for me I just let them decide.
well said, I actually eat both, but like I said, my diet is mainly vegetables.

I think the biggest “good reason” to eat meat, for me, is:
Damn, it tastes good!
See this is the problem. Your all talking about the mass slaughter of animals for your food. A lot of people here now don’t eat that much “processed” meat. Sure some people do, but people are getting a lot smarter and are starting to grow their own cattle, chickens, and pigs. Home grown animals are the greatest, unless you treat them like shit and rarely feed them anything good. With all the love you give them and all the money you spend on them cause in handy when the day of killing comes along. Plus you get a lot more for little. We just killed one of our cows and split in in half with one of our relatives. with only 1 half of a cow we filled two HUGE freezer chests with meat. All sorts of wonder types of steaks, loins, ground beef, and ribs. This is going to last us for a year. Plus we get 8 eggs per day from our chickens in our backyard. And if you are all thinking I live on a farm; You’re dead wrong I live in the middle of a residential suburb.
tl;dr
Home grown animals are the most sufficient, best tasting, and money efficient way to eat meat.
^“Fixed that for you”?
And no, nearly all of it.
If that’s a good enough reason for you, I’m not going to argue, but I was reacting to Winged One’s unfounded attacks on mattemuse.
Yep.
I don’t eat mass produced meat. And all the arguments (except for humane conditions for the animals) can also be made for mass produced fruits, vegetables, and grains. Liberal use of pesticides, for example, are none too healthy for the vegetarian/vegan. Also, soda pop does not have meat at all in it, but it’s none too healthy.
Really, what I see here are two different arguments:
- The dangers of mass production of food.
- Meat versus vegetable.
We can debate point 2. But using point 1 as an argument for point 2 is silly, IMHO.
All logical points. Thank you, you are obviously a better candidate for defending vegetarianism than Mattabuse or whatever his name is.
pretty much, burbinator did a good job here
so guys, ahm what about “soya<–(spelling?)” milk ? I mean…WHAT ?!
That’s a good point. Then again, at least where I live, there are more ecological options for vegetarian products than there are for meat products.
And I’m not sure, but I think the stuff they do with meat goes a lot further than what they do with other food products.
Injecting it with antibiotics, hormones and who knows what else. Feeding animals meat of their own species, and even their own feces.
For me at least though, the other points are more than good enough to try to limit my meat eating as much as possible.
that’s horrible
the world is a horrible place
you assume that my comment had everything to do with your posts in this thread.
The reason I’d ban you is because you are Comerade Tiki with a much more limited volcabulary.
I like what rossman has going on. I need to get me a cow.
Wasn’t there a huge e.coli scare on spinach a while back? I know that it resulted in Subway dropping baby spinach from their offered toppings. I used to be all over that. So any argument about how meat is more dangerous to produce than vegetables is about the same as saying Mac users don’t get viruses. People don’t make viruses for the mac because it’s too much effort for no return. Same thing with vegetable production; if people have to actually start mass producing them on the scale that meat production is at, then pesticides and other issues are going to become more of a problem in that field.
On that note, I have yet to run into any type of sandwich that wasn’t made better by adding eggs and bacon to it (there is no vegetable that does that) I’d rather drink curdled skim milk than ever drink some sort of soy product or milk alternative (I have tried them, they all fucking taste NASTY)
tofu tastes horrible unless you have first made sure to thoroughly soak it in some sort of meat broth in order to get it to pick up the flavor, (which kinda defeats the purpose, doesn’t it?) even then it feels like you’re chewing on meat jello.
And don’t even get me started on beans, beans are practically worse than tofu.
Eating meat isn’t morally wrong either. Animals eat meat, omnivores eat meat regularly, even chickens will eat meat when they can get it. As the saying goes, if we weren’t supposed to eat animals, then they shouldn’t have been made out of meat.
Green beans, broccoli, corn, carrots, bell peppers, spinach, lettuce and some muchrooms, I like those raw or steamed only. Fruits should never be cooked. I take whole grain bread over white any day. I eat pretty damn healthy and I do it WITH meat. Thank you.
@Grey Acumen:
When the same amount of land that was used to grow food for cows, which in turn grew into tasty steaks for, let’s say, 20 people could be used to grow grain which could feed 200 or even 2000 people, you would not consider meat-eating morally wrong?
