Aye same here.
Holy shit there’s a lot of people viewing this thread… I better be really careful about what I say. All eyes are on me.
A media release can end up getting people to think it’ll release soon, so when it’s not released when they think it will be, or when more media doesn’t come, then this causes badmouthing of the mod. When no media is released there’s no reason to think it’ll be released soon, or to want more, since it’s not there.
I agree that the devs shouldn’t care what people think though, for example, this has just caused a waste of what could have been just a bit more diversity in the Hgrunts (they’ve now given all of them the same voice instead of two voice variates, and now all standard Hgrunts wear masks, which defeats the purpose of the FCS), although in the case of media, it’s understandable to not want to release: it’s annoying have people complain “why isnt dis released?” or “why is there no moar media?”.
It’s funny, when it was first uploaded, people were ripping it apart about the iron sights, and everything in general - now, it gets re-uploaded with a link to Ram’s explanations, and everyone is like THIS IS AMAZING
Same here.
Yeah, I was suspicious of those posts as well. I also could have sworn Joel had a different account name in the past, but cant remember what is was.
While what he’s saying makes sense, can one of the devs please confirm if this really is Joel or not?
I think it makes more sense to keep them with the gasmasks, I mean they are the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit? Seems like a gasmask would be a standard part of their equipment and as Joel Nielsen said
It dehumanizes them in the same way with the metro cops in half-life 2 and was probaly why valve made the grunts the way they are in the first place. It just makes sense.
Also the developers know what their doing, they arn’t just jumping on the band wagon with these changes. They took in the criticism, and decided to change things that they agreed with, if they didn’t agree it was best for the mod then they woudn’t change it? Simple as
But, but … Gordon doesn’t expect to kill! He only commits about 259 counts of armed self-defense!
I figure with the statutes of limitations, it should really be closer to 250.
Hurray! I’m me!
Yay! You’re you!
Thanks stormseeker, just wanted to make sure some troll wasn’t spreading misinformation. :fffuuu:
I don’t think there should be static over the HECU’s voices, but I think their should be a lot of radio transmissions going in and out at all time.
I apologize again. Hope it was understandable, I too thought you were a troll toying with our hopes, heh heh.
The gruffy radio chatter probably does best help for gameplay reasons, and as well I do think of it when I think of HECU. Can’t say much for the unfiltered voices as I haven’t watched the video, though. So long as they don’t all sound 16 I think it’ll sound nice enough.
There were in the vid.
Well Why the Fuck Not?
All set
I know, but like, I want to hear more though. It should go all sporadic and violent when you attack them and stuff.
I mean, in the original, the HECU were intimidating as fuck! If they even spotted you, a voice over the radio would be all like "[COLOR=‘Red’]Let’s go!," and I would be like…"Fuck!"
Also, instead of coming right out and attacking you, -like they do in Black Mesa- they would run for cover first and one by one jump out from cover and fire at you. Almost like they would set up some kind of defensive parameter. It was shockingly realistic and scary as hell with all the communication over that radio. Also, and most importantly, they would fucking throw grenades at you if you tried to hide for a split second. It was brutal as hell, which really made it feel like they knew what they were doing.
The AI in Black Mesa (basically the Combine Soldier AI) is okay, but they immediately run right the fuck at you and end up getting killed before they can even do anything interesting. That is, if there is anything interesting that they do.
As for their young sounding voices, I kinda like that. I mean, the deep voiced professionals is quite a effective, but young angst-filled military grunts is just as intimidating. Kinda like the soldiers in “28 Days Later”, or the some of the crazier Marines in “The Rock,” with Sean Connery.
-Everyone bitching for the mod’s release since forever.
-Get media release, psyched to learn they are almost finished.
-“Everything looks awesome! Can’t wait! Great job, dev’s!”
-Watch leaked video a few months later, gets blown away, psyched beyond all comprehension.
-Find out people online are losing their shit:
“THOSE VOICES ARE FINAL? I HOPE THEY CHANGE THOSE.”

Unlike some people usually think, the Marines do not use the AI from the Combine
It was said earlier on that the video was on easy. I’m sure we’ll see stuff like this on harder difficulties in the mod.
That would be nice
