ValveTime BlackMesa Gameplay footage

To be honest, the video looks incredibly professional and well designed…good job! The graphics, details and sound effects are superb, and adding a few “modern” FPS-elements like ironsight and other effects just make the gameplay feel fresh…this doesn’t look like a mod to me, it looks like a full retail game that should be sold in stores. Congratulations Black Mesa team once again : )

Also, are we back to the old HL2 shotgun?

https://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/SPAS-12_%28disambiguation%29
Take a look at both of these - they are basically the same model of a shotgun, the HL2 one just has revamped graphics. BM: S revamps a revamped version.

No shit. I know what SPAS-12 is and how it looks.

But correct me if I’m wrong - the one in the beginning looks like a HL2 model. Ram said it would use new geometry and textures, which from the video seems like it’s not the case. And Ram said here that every asset is final in the video. Hence asking.

P.S. referring to wiki, which refers to this:

EDIT: Nvmd. I see now that at least the texture is different. Blame ytb compression

That was a fantastic video, the game looks like it should be picked up by valve and added to the next box deal with hl3. great work all

It plausible to get a link to that 1080p vid?

You Tube’s compression quality doesn’t do the video justice imo.

Yeah, this video should be uploaded in 1080p. For other gameplay videos that could’ve been uploaded it wouldn’t have mattered, but this video shows the darkest part of the game (the tram) and one of the few times you see the night sky. In other words, it’s a pretty dark video, and dark images are shitty in low resolutions.

Very impressed by everything in this video! I never doubted your skills, but either way my expectations were exceeded. Thanks with all my heart for the work you’ve put in so far devs, and I hope the mod is just as good as it looks so far!

Yesterday I decided not to watch the clip, as I wanted to keep the gameplay a secret for myself until launch. I failed today. Miserably.

But the developers did/has not.

I am thoroughly impressed and happy to see how far they have come, and glad Raminator answered the question I and many others had.

Keep going strong BM team!

So I watched the video and came here thinking I’d be chiming in on a “OMG, the music is amazing” conversation that would be going on, but from the first few pages of comments I’m surprised that everyone hates it?

I can’t help but scratch my head at other things too. I thought that more people would have been impressed by the graphics and how professional everything is. There’s only so much you can get from screenshots, but actual footage is a different story. From little things like “Chromatic Abberation” when the player gets shot; to the consistancy of the colour pallette, textures/models and lighting that bring the artistic vision together in a very professional way. I guess what I mean by that is that not one thing on screen stands out in an odd way, everything fits together like it’s meant to be.

The biggest thing that surprised me from comments so far is about the voice acting. As I watched the video I had a rush of nostalgia from the cheesy lines from the soldiers. I was given the impression that it was that way on purpose, not for the fact that it’s done by amateurs, but rather for the reasons that; a) it was cheesy in the original game; and b) The concept recordings that were released years ago were fantastic and were themselves hinting at the humour of the original. (ie Security gaurd blowing himself and the scientist up by accident).

All in all, I personally had certain expectations for the game and what the team were going to do and the video exceeded it in ways I didn’t expect.

I would also like to jump on the bandwagon asking for Raminator to release the 1080p version officially, so I can watch that badboy in all its proper glory.

Just quickly, the video is on 82,727 as of 3:00pm GMT, almost a day after it’s initial upload.

So I guess doubters and conspiracy theorists can hang their heads in shame.

Quite excited now, have been putting off playing the half-life series until this was released, and now there’s a chance that it could be on its way shortly.

Thanks again guys, it looks great.

It looks like it’ll be worth the wait.

Thank you, man. Really. I didn’t know how that blurry effect was called: “chromatic aberration.” I tried to explain it to a friend to point out how cool it looked and failed miserably. It’s really a great effect, and it looks cool in this Sci-Fi-ish game.

I’m surprised by some of the nitpicky reaction too. Don’t get me wrong: I understand why people criticize the mod. That gauge texture in the launch control panel looks like it would have a place in Half-Life 1, for example. That’s nitpicking to a ridiculous level, but I think it’s okay if then people point out the obvious… it looks frigging amazing. It looks like a modern game without losing the Half-Life 1 feel, which is an impressive achievement. The level design is incredible and I just love how the gunplay handles.

I just really hope the Black Mesa devs upload the video themselves, in 1080p, so that we can really see the true detail of the mod.

UPDATE: PC gamer have now commented on it

Why does everyone hate the head bob? I love it, reminds me of Quake

Especially since the original retail version did indeed have a head bob. And these so called “fans” of the original complain about it having the the head bob. I was really young when I first played Half-Life and when I first tried the Steam version, I was thought to myself “Hey, why isn’t the camera leaning like it used to?” I even tried for awhile to get it back in the game. But alas, it looks like that stuff was hard coded into the camera script and isn’t exactly an easy edit. :[

EDIT: For those who want to disable the camera roll, use sv_rollangle # Replace the # with the density of the roll you want. 0 disables it completely.

Someone on youtube told me the Camera roll is in the source, but disabled in most games, the command sv_rollangle (or maybe it was v_rollangle) is in the engine but disabled in game.

Oh. My. God. After MONTHS of searching every possible corner of the web and even starting threads, no one has been able to tell me this command. Thank you! So much!

Then the voice actors have been trying a bit too hard in my opinion. The original voices were cheesy, but they sounded like actual human beings. These ones just sound outright bizarre.

I’m sure it’ll grow on me, though, just like the music did.

It sounds a bit forced, but I’m not gonna complain. It is after all, free.
