Valve to make Source Engine SDK free

in b4 that means Black Mesa doesn’t require any purchase from Valve and therefore cannot be released on the Source engine.

Kinda not much of a change; if you’re mapping for the source engine, you’ve probably already purchased a game

DENIED

Source is a great engine, but from what I remember working with Alien Swarm it cannot compete with the Unreal Development Kit (also free for non-commercial use). If Valve wants to do what Epic Games is doing then they seriously need to change the development environment.

Alien swarm sdk isnt exactly a good representative of the source engine as a whole from my experience…

I’m talking about the development environment. It’s very primitive compared to the UDK.

-snip-

I really doubt that they would remove the test map option from Hammer.

What the hell is up with Valve and giving stuff out for free. I’m not complaining I just think it’s kind of weird.

They haven’t given much out for free. TF2? They’ll make ten times as much with the store. The SDK? What kind of dev doesn’t own at least one Valve game?

It’s called clever marketing. Would you rather have Activision running the show?

They usually have other motives.

Portal 1 free for a month was to get more people on steam plus help with the mac launch.

TF2 free is because they will make more money selling items than the game.

Alien Swarm was to get more steam users and experiment with almost entirely user generated content based games.

Its a different kinda business tactic but it seems to be working.

They’re about to start on a new engine in secret, and are trying to lengthen Source (1?)'s life in the meantime. DOTA2 may be the last Source game out by Valve.

That’s baseless btw, completely. It’d be cool though.

Im sure they are working on Source 2 … c’mon new consoles will come soon with Shader model 6.0 ( :stuck_out_tongue: ) and resolution of 10000000008000000000p so they need something new

… why? Just because the SDK is free doesn’t mean BM can’t be on Source, it’s entirely unrelated.

I know, but if I didn’t someone else would have mentioned it.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
