Valve ‘Probably’ Done With Single-Player Games

Discuss. It’s kind of an odd, vague statement, but it sounds like Gabe is saying he doesn’t want to do any more games that don’t have the option to play alone. Maybe he’s not including the final part of Half Life, and if he isn’t…well is that really so crazy, for Valve at least? Consider their main franchises: Half Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress, and Counter Strike. 2 of those, TF and CS, are multiplayer only. L4D can be played alone but is geared towards multiplayer. Portal 2 has co-op. Half Life has Death Match. Then there’s Alien Swarm, and Dota 2 coming soon, both multiplayer games.

In any case, as long as they release the final Half Life like normal, I’ll be happy with whatever they do afterward, since they make fun, innovative MP games. It’d be a shame, since they’ve proven they can make awesome SP storylines too, but I’d be okay with it.

Most companies are probably done with singleplayer-only games, maybe even Bioware. I’m already used to the multiplayer option in everything.

Anyone else still stuck in 2001 can fucking deal with it

“Portal 2 will probably be Valve’s last game with an isolated single-player experience”

The question is what they mean by “isolated single-player experience”.

As long as episode 3 has a singleplayer campaign I’ll be happy for it to have a coop or something like that.

What a statement…

A few weeks ago, Erik Wolpaw said, that they are still going to develop Singleplayergames.

I hope they just mean that they’re going to have co-op/multiplayer in addition to single-player. Half-Life, Half-Life 2 (and its episodes), Portal, Portal 2. Those are my favorite Valve games. Why would they abandon doing something they’re so damn good at? :frowning:

^read it again.

They said, Portal 2 is probably the last game, where you play “alone, as only one human alive”, where you don’t meet other humans.

I don’t like multiplayer, and I’m sure they’re not “done” with single player. They’re just also including multiplayer. You can just not play it if you don’t like it.

So, a “comprehensive reading” course… Should I sign up 90% of the people that replied in this thread as well as the people that commented on the original article that was written by a braindead monkey?

There won’t be another Portal anyway I think. But Valve MUST keep on doing singleplayer games rather than focusing on coop or even worse multiplayer games like Counter-Strike, Deathmatch and Team Fortress. I’m tired of game developers only producing multiplayer games like Treyarch and Infinity Ward do with Call of Duty. (I admit that I like the singleplayer very much though)

Im also a singleplayergamer, and Valve already stated, that they are still going to make SP games.

if valve stops making SP games im gonna go there and plant a bomb. But safe Gabe so i can torture him in a dark chamber.

Maybe you should take some english lessons first?

Valve don’t seem the types to arbitrarily cut themselves off from a whole style of gaming with a blanket statement like this. I’m guessing it was misinterpreted by the guy who wrote the Portal 2 making-of.

The fact that he said he was unable to clarify or add anything to that makes me think he might be mistaken.

It probably mean that in episode3/hl3 we will have co-op singleplayer to play Gordon and Alyx and it will also have multiplayer which is good I think but this mean that no new half life in 2-3 years :frowning:

I don’t see how that’s gonna help him in planting bombs and torturing Gabe…

Pretty sure this German dude is correct.

I would be very glad if it was that.

I hope they don’t start doing “Left 4 Dead singleplayer” with bots, that would really suck
If they can make bots as good as their scripted NPCs, than that’s ok, but L4D-style bots won’t cut it

It basically says, “someone at Valve said it trust me guise i didnt make this up!!!”

I’d take it with a grain of salt. I think it’s funny how people say Gabe said it…

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
