VALVe more profitable than Apple and Google

"Gabe Newell is a rich man. Just how rich? According to a recent article in Forbes magazine, he owns over half the company he cofounded, Valve Software, which is estimated to be worth between $2 billion and $4 billion. That valuation pegs him as a member of the billionaires’ club–or, conservatively, at least puts him close to it.

The key to Newell’s success is Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, and Portal developer Valve, which has shown rapid growth in recent years. Last October, the company predicted 200 percent year-over-year growth, thanks in large part to its Steam online service. Speaking with the magazine, Newell said his company is, per employee, more profitable than Apple or Google.

According to Forbes, Steam controls half to 70 percent of the $4 billion market for downloadable PC games, thanks to the service’s ease of use and mod-friendly features. It further explained Steam’s success by outlining the company’s profit sharing with publishers. At retail, publishers get 30 percent gross margin–on Steam, they get 70 percent.

Forbes’ article also touched on Newell’s battle with Fuchs’ dystrophy, a congenital eye disease that eats away at the cornea. Newell eventually had cornea transplants in 2006 and 2007, which fixed his eyesight and gave him a new outlook on life–literally.

“The thing that snuck past my defenses was that not only could I see again but I could see better than I ever had before,” he said. “I felt like I was in a fantasy story. It reminded me of how fast the future is coming at us and from what unexpected directions.”

All I can say is I hope that developers take a hint.

In other news, Gabe Newell has changed his name to Gabraham McMoneybucks, Esq. III (I can’t believe he’s probably a billionaire. Money well-earned).

I think the thing that amazes me most about the company is the fact that they really-no-bullshitting love gaming, and make their business decisions on the philosophy of “what’s good for gamers is what’s good for business.” That’s something that you rarely see in any industry, and I’m glad it’s been so successful for them.

It also helps that Newell is about three years ahead of everyone else in his ability to predict where technology is going.

it helps that he was originally working for Microsoft

That’s where the initial money to make the business came from but when he left Microsoft he was probably only a millionaire.

pretty lucky how he makes exactly enough to support his diet w. change left over to collect knives like a retarded 14 yearold nerd could only dream to

Not to mention all those charitable donations to the “University for Unoriginal, Mentally handicapped Jokesters.” It’s great that everybody can flourish in today’s world.

really miss the ol alma mater.

Having a cool 10-20 mil does indeed help with business ventures. The “turning that into a billion” part is still quite the feat though.

He worked for Microsoft giving him enough to support Valve out of his pocket for the first few years. Then, after Half-life 2 was released with Steam, people from all over wanted to use Steam and had to compensate. Now Gabe has so much money that he couldn’t even hold it all in his stomach. Shocker, I know…

Note: This is the second time posting this pic somewhere on the forum. It’s just so badass that I couldn’t resist reposting it, sorry.

Thanks for the insight HPN.

no problem, garthbartin

I was wondering how rich he is.
You can’t really tell because he wears the same red polo shirt in most pictures.

:what:

The guy who thought of toilet paper is laughing right now. The rich bastard!

gabe be keepin it real

in other news hurry up and sell your apple stock people

steve jobs has cancer

naturally apple will deny it till the end and that’s what will ruin them

This is probably true. If Jobs dies, apple tanks. I don’t know why it would, but it does. Honestly, does it require one man’s genius to make products that are white, silver, and black with rounded edges?

Also, good for Gabe, although Valve is not more profitable than Apple or Google. Thread title is a lie.

inb4 Gabe Newell jokes

Don’t you know? His gravitational field sucks them in before they can be posted. Why yes, that did just ignore the laws of physics.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
