Valve is Awesome. Reason #3481923012787

Ok, so I emailed Valve and told them that I wanted to introduce my girlfriend to DoD:S (she doesn’t know what an FPS is). The only problem was, I only had $9.16 in my paypal, and the game costs $9.99. After emailing them a predicament they came back and asked what her username was on Steam, I told them, and within like 2 minutes they had activated the game on her account… for free.

Please, don’t use my story to exploit Valve for free games like this, I just wanted to show how awesome they are (again) to their community.

That is pretty ridiculous.

you-‘Hey I want your product, but I can’t afford it. What should I do?’
valve-‘Oh? Well here, have it for free.’

Seriously?

Good luck. Soon you’ll be walking in on Gabe and your girlfriend in bed.

I think Ramirezoid has hit on the real reason for Valve’s generosity.

;D

It’s good marketing on their end, keeping their fanbase happy, and potentially introducing them into other games they make, so people are more likely to buy other games they make. DoD isn’t exactly a huge moneymaker for them anymore, so it’s not such a big deal that they give away the game for free.

I like valve too.

fix’d

I so hope they make a reincarnation of it soon…
Unlikely.

why complain about something good?

I wasn’t complaining. I just said it was ridiculous.
The whole situation is ridiculous actually.
OP: What made you think to contact valve about your money shortage? I’m betting this is a little but better than what you were expecting to happen, but what were you expecting to happen? Get some info about an upcoming sale or something?

whatever, they’re still awesome.

Honestly I was hoping they’d let me pay $9.16 for it, but they blew me away when they gave it for free.

that’s their job:to blow everybody away with their awesomeness.

That is crazy. It is refreshing to see a company care so much about PR, especially when it can create a new fan.
I guess the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
Good on you.

^completely agree with Max.
Seriously, this is very strange.

I wasn’t complaining, merely explaining my situation. They had the opportunity to completely ignore my email.
:hmph:

Why would you ask for DoD Source. I doubt she’ll want to even play it.

I see what you did thar.

What are you talking about?
I didn’t say you were complaining…I didn’t even imply that.
:brow:

And once again Valve is awsome.

It’s also a good tactic, if she like’s DoD, she’ll probably like TF2 and CS:S and the HL series, ect., so they’ve gotten a new customer. And, if not, they can afford to be generous. They are the best FPS company ever, after all.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
