Ultra Hi-Def Gaming With The ASUS PQ321 Monitor

If you can afford it…

Next-gen graphic cards really needed to up the framerates. Interesting quote from the article “But once software houses will really start to support Ultra HD that’ll be the moment in time where the real difference will be made as you can expect UHD texture packs in the future. Some software houses already have committed to that, I just am not allowed to tell you which games will have it.”

Lots of games don’t even have textures that look good at 1080p, let alone higher. And I don’t think HDMI right now supports 4k resolutions. Not sure about stuff like DVI though.

They shouldn’t really any look worse than they do on a 1080p display, unless you’re using a larger screen.

HDMI 1.4 can do 3840x2160 at 30Hz, but you’ll need multiple cables to get 60Hz, I think.
HDMI 2.0 is supposed to be able to handle 3840x2160 at 60Hz.

Dual-link DVI seems to be able to handle 3840x2160 at 60Hz.
Single-link might be able to do 30Hz…

I’m sure future high end Graphics cards and 4k monitors and even late-in-life next gen consoles will come bundled with HDMI cables that CAN handle it.

albeit shitty flimsy ones.

Outside of really big screens, does PC gaming really benefit from anything higher than 2K? I’m pretty happy with 1080p as it is, although it would be cool to have higher pixel density on a 23" computer screen.

• Less need for antialiasing, and helps to limit the blurring caused by the post-process AA that’s become so common recently
• Better visibility and clarity of distant objects and textures (even if you don’t really see jaggies, the improvement in detail might still be noticeable)
• Allows for higher-resolution textures and geometry to be viewed without as much detail being obscured/limited by the screen resolution
• Clearer text and UI

A less noticeable/smaller pixel grid might also reduce eye strain?

The only downside to using higher resolutions is the performance hit (and if you need scaling to prevent text becoming too small, sometimes compatibility with older programs can be an issue).

i want a UHD projector to replace my XGA one

Fair enough. Although we might still have to wait a couple of years until both 4K monitors and graphics cards good enough to run games at 4K 60fps are affordable for most people.

The biggest advantage I’ve gotten out of my measly 2560x1440 display is the increase in screen real estate. And the difference in quality is pretty noticeable in games, especially League of Legends where everything is at the same view distance at all times so it’s really obvious when a character model is more clear.
