You think that’s bad? They programmed the new version to refuse to run on DX6 and 7 hardware for no apparent reason. The new version is so slow I have to keep a non-steam version of hl2 and ep1 so I can play it faster than 1fps on a laptop with integrated graphics.

Hackers built a steam-like wrapper called steamemu, it tells hl2.exe that steam is running and everything is fine, then you just extract the source gcf files in the same dir and it works exactly like the WON version of half life 1. For example, to run a mod you type -game (mod name) in the shortcut command line.
