Ubuntu

Hi people, just wandering, ive got a new build i just peiced together (yes victus, she’s all there. )

In the install setup i can erase and use entire disk, but when that happens itll be a lil more awkward installing windows 7, i guess im gonna create a partition? on average with a bit of lee way what size shall i partition and what settings shall i give that partition, bearing in mind ill also have 7 and will want that as a primary boot.

Any suggesstions if possible? thx.

Install 7 first. Then install ubuntu. It’ll resize your windows partition and there’ll be an option when you set up grub to use windows as your default OS. If you install ubuntu first, you’ll have to go through grub.conf and set it up manually. Not at all hard if you know what you’re doing, but it’s easier to let setup do it for you.

Fair play, ill wait for my 7 to arrive :frowning:

Installing Windows first is definitely the easiest solution. I prefer not to resize partitions though, so I like to setup my partitions before I install. Also, you really only need to make one partition as big as you need for one of the OS’s because the other OS (linux/windows) will automatically partition and create it’s own filesystem when installed.

You can preview Ubuntu without installing. Just boot your computer using the Ubuntu CD and you’ll be able to load the OS directly from it. It’s much slower than the installed version (duh) but at least you can get a sneek peak of its features before Windows 7 arrives.

Thats just how i posted this message, you should see my resolution on my 42" :stuck_out_tongue:

preview reso lol.

You can partition your disk using Gparted(it should be somewhere in system menu) in live session. A brand new disk usually comes unformatted and it takes a while, I suggest you do it(create partitions and format them) so you won’t wait long during windows installation.

You can have both without the need for a partition. Check out Wubi. It installs Ubuntu (or Kubuntu or Xubuntu) from within Windows, and puts an entry straight into the Windows boot menu.

Also if you don’t like it you can simply uninstall Wubi from Windows and your Ubuntu will simply go away again!

I just used Wubi to install Ubuntu. I’m liking 10.04 so far, just had to change from the Dark Mac wannabe theme to something more sleek.

If you’re new to linux, i would suggest Linux Mint. It’s based on Ubuntu, so it’s got heaps of compatability, and it very easy to get used to.

Compatability you say? what kind of things that are very popular would you say work?

ill wait till tommorow - tueday hopefully ill have windows by then.

How do I disable the annoying authentication dialog in Ubuntu 10.04? I used to be able to disable it by going to Users and Groups but the option is no longer there in this version.

Anything that works in Ubuntu will work in Linux mint.

Funny your about your irelander!

Yeah im using Ubuntu, just installed it now. its nice.
