The Windows 8 Thread

Didn’t see a thread like this so I’d thought I’d make one. I’d like to start a discussion about Windows 8 since it’s going to hit the shelves in a few months.

I’d would like to start off by saying I’m really scared for Windows 8. Windows 7 is excellent. It’s fast, simple, and really has no major issues around it. Gabe Newell himself even said that he hates what Microsoft has done with Windows 8. I pretty much do too. I realize the desktop is integrated but let’s be honest, remember what happened when Windows took over DOS? DOS was still there until Windows pretty much got rid of it. But that was really for the better since Windows is far easier than DOS to use. Now all we have left is command prompt. I fear the desktop as we know it will eventually be obliterated by the Metro UI for the more casual market. I may have this completely wrong and Windows 8 may be a smash hit, but if Gaben says it’s bad, it must be pretty suckish.

And I really hate how they took the ribbon layout and slapped it on Windows explorer. Never really liked the ribbon thing. Everything always felt too cluttered. But I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

I don’t like it either. I don’t see it becoming that big with desktop users.

From what I understand, you can disable the metro ui.

I could potentially see it becoming big in the tablet PC’s but certainly not desktops. I see that MS is clearly trying to deliver the same experience on all platforms. But they’re realizing that what they’re doing is simply not possible. You can’t have the same experience on a phone and on a desktop because they’re not the same device. Nor do I WANT to do the same thing on a phone as a desktop. At least, not in the same way.

You can’t. It is possible to disable it only by using 3rd party applications and/or registry hacks.

Unless there is a way to get the “File, Edit, View, etc, Help” in explorer I am not upgrading past Windows 7.

Has that been officially confirmed by Microsoft or are people just taking what they see in the current public test as granted for the final version?

Then you essentially have Windows 7, so what is the point?

Apparently Windows 8 is even faster and more lightweight than 7, so that kind of boost would be good for games.

Of course if Microsoft really wants to force that Metro shit on us, then I too will stay with 7.

The Windows 8 consumer preview was no faster on my laptop than Windows 7. Of course that’s hardly conclusive being just what I’ve dealt with.

I’d say it’s worse, never had trouble with 7 on VirtualPC but 8 runs like crap.

Bah, they should just rename it Windows for Facebook.

So… no Flash in Metro?

HTML5 son.

It looks and feels like it was designed for use by autistic children. Everything’s minimal and friendly looking.
It’s so basic. You can tell it wants to wipe the ass of the techno-incompetent consumer.

I may have to stay with win 7 till my computer goes. but by then, they’ll have win 10

That’s where the money is.

Yeah HTML 5. I mean, come on. It works EVERYWHERE right?!?! All games that once used flash use it and YouTube, man. There HTML 5 Beta is great! Not trying to bash Maxey but really? No flash is just retarded.

No Flash = Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs = Apple
Windows 8 Metro = No Flash
Windows 8 = Apple

Yeah the solid colored tiles a la Windows Mobile is horrendous. The idea that the logon or welcome screen has widgets on it and delivers constant RSS, email, weather, etc feeds, while not giving you access to programs unless you specifically add a pretty red or blue or green square for it… sad.

The only thing I’ve heard so far that is positive about Windows 8 (which may not even be true because it was a rumor MaximumPC heard) was the ability to do a true “refresh” of the OS - pretty much the Windows 7 “in place install” without trashing your program files and user profile. That, and confirmed is the fact that AMD processors will have better thread handling, which is good for AMD users.

Windows 7 is the new XP = it will be my OS for the next decade.
