Like I said before, MGS is not the type of game where 60fps is an improvement due to reasons such as controller deadzones and the overall pace of the game. Although I will agree that it doesn’t hurt the gameplay in any way.

Would be a good point if it wasn’t for Kojima having fuck all to do with HD ports (or actually gave two shits about), which were all (sloppily) done by blupoint. Another example is the way they were planning to do all the cutscenes at 2.35:1 initially - they made an option of fullscreening at 16:9 only after some people (either at Snake Soup or MGS:TUS) pointed out how fucked up some of the cutscenes looked. Thanks for proving my point with that MGS2 remark btw.

The only work Kojima did for HD ports was moving his lower jaw up and down for interviews. How long will it take people to realize that this whole HD remaster business is a simple cash-in by Konami? I mean, it’s not like the first time, the essential collection was released 5 years ago.
MGS4 too btw.

Pacific Rim seems pretty interesting. Granted, the sum of my knowledge of it is “giant mecha”, but yeah.

I wonder where Del Toro will plug in catholic symbolism in this one.

The giant robot is Jesus.

Hahaha oh god. In my opinion, Pacific Rim is basically a Japanese mecha anime meets Godzilla meets Hollywood. However, it does look pretty damn good anyways.

Either way, we seem to differ on how we perceive it. 60 fps always looks better to me in games, I can’t think of a single exception unless the game breaks at that framerate. You seem to not feel that way though.

You just got page ninja’d. We’re talking about giant mecha now.

Nah, ODB’s post is still on this page that I was responding to.

i have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about

what does that have to do with pure pwnage at all?

Are giant mechs not pure pwnage?

Seriously, though, Pacific Rim a giant mecha movie that’s coming out.

During actual gameplay, I don’t mind if it’s 60 fps. I do mind though when the fucking thing fluctuates. Not even necessarily dips.
Not actual gameplay, but in MGS4 I fucking hated when most of the given cutscene ran at 24-30 fps when all of a sudden the fps skyrocket to 60 on some low detail shot.

Stable 30 FPS > fluctuating 60 fps.

Yes indeed they are.

Yeah, it’s pretty important to have a universally stable framerate. Being a director/cinematographer myself in my off-hours, I’ve shot films at 60fps, 24fps, and 30fps. For fast motion sequences where clarity is essential, 60fps is a huge boon- it makes what would otherwise be a shakycam mess of whip-panning during shootouts feel more like it’s the viewer’s eyes darting around trying to look for snipers. It feels a lot more like you’re “really there,” and for gameplay sequences it also serves a practical purpose of allowing the viewer to retain greater clarity during the chaos of something like a Modern Warfare game.

Now look at Metal Gear Solid 2’s HD port. The original game was a variable speed 60fps, with dips during sequences like cutscenes. If it weren’t for the original assets being not big enough to cover the entire re-matted 16x9 widescreen presentation, it would probably look great in HD. (Check the Tanker Chapter pans over the Discovery in the HD port to see what I mean.)

Overall though, the port was a lot smoother for MGS2 than MGS3. As much as I love the new framerate for gameplay reasons, the cutscenes certainly didn’t transition as well.

i was talking about pure pwnage, the web series/tv series/future movie

never heard of pacific rim or giant mecha

Well, see, Peter Jackson wanted everyone to be ‘really there’ - and he succeeded. But that’s exactly the opposite to the way film works. You don’t want the viewer to immerse too far, otherwise it breaks the suspension of disbelief by putting the artificiality of the props and light out in front. You might as well sell tickets to an actual film set where you can see all the fake set-ups, props and costumes up close - same effect.
When fake shit moves smoothly at realistic framerate - you can’t help but notice it since the director has shoven it in your face. That’s what uncanny valley is and it is detrimental to the narrative.
When fake shit moves at 24fps - you don’t really pay attention, because psychologically, you are not forced to question the realism of the set like you do with HFR and therefore you can focus more on the narrative.

As for the stutter/clarity, here’s an interesting quote:

P.S. Oh and about MGS2 - the textures look especially repulsive. The whole thing almost looks cel-shaded at points haha.

Speaking of the HD ports, ODB, did you get your hands on Danger High Voltage’s port of the Zone of the Enders games?

Is The Hobbit any good, actually? Haven’t seen it yet, but I think my reaction would probably be firmly along the lines of “meh”

In my opinion, it was pretty good. It differs from the book, but not in any important ways that I can tell. In all, probably a 8/10. I’d recommend watching it.

No, but I heard they fucked up on that one too, especially on PS3

Depends on whether you enjoy LotR and its lore really.

This. I enjoyed The Hobbit, but it’s no where near what the book was, it introduced another antagonist that wasn’t there inside the book.

In other news, I can stretch enough to kick someone in the face again. Not quite where I want it, but it’s getting there. (I want to be able to do the splits again)

I’ve read and loved all of Tolkien’s works on Middle-earth, but Jackson’s movies didn’t come anywhere close. Not to say they’re bad, but I feel they miss the entire point and atmosphere of the original work.

My impression of The Hobbit is “more of the same”, but I’ll probably watch it at some point.
