As a general rule, I use “thee” before a word beginning with a vowel, and “thuh” before a word beginning with a consonant.
This give me an idea, I want to try and use “the” as little as possible and see if people notice.

On the matter of thuh and thee it’s more a limitation of our alphabet than the pronounciation. If we had a letter or digraph for both phonemes then there wouldn’t be an issue. Personally I’d be in favour of bringing back thorn ( þ ).

I at least don’t differentiate th sounds in those two pronunciations of the. I always have this thing where I associate different sounds with directions so the th sound in the is more of a horizontal sound to me while the the sound in thread is more of a vertical sound. I don’t know if that makes any sense to anybody else or not.
Edit: It’s the same with voiced and unvoiced sounds.
