The REAL (real life) Black Mesa Facility...

we all know that there’s a real black mesa facility in new mexico and that it was a nuclear missile development and test facility… but wikipedia doesn’t say much about the real BM facility… so i wonder is it still top secret? if not, is it possible to visit it? if so, did anybody stay there for a visit? or is there somewhere more information about the facility? because google doesn’t find very much about that real thing… it would be really interesting to know more about the real facility…

Nope.

It doesn’t actually exist…
It was made up like this:

AND HALF LIFE REALLY HAPPENED GUYS

it exists:

here’s another link:

i thought you guys knew that… :stuck_out_tongue:

Check out Kirtland Air Force Base and Los Alamos National Laboratory , both in New Mexico. I do remember hearing about some nuclear testing range though, don’t know if it was actually called Black Mesa though.Otherwise, you best be trolling.

edit: :ninja:'d

Utah != New Mexico

ok guys, i’m sorry because i was wrong with the location! my mistake  the real Black Mesa test facility was in Utah, not in New Mexico. you can read this in the wiki link i’ve posted above and on the second link you can see all the test launches they did until the facility closed 1970/71.

so there was a real black mesa nuclear missile development and test facility! and i just wanted to know a bit more about it…

Okay so can I lock this now, since this isn’t really relevant to BM?

don’t know if anybody is interested about the real facility except me, too…
but if i’m in the wrong category then i’m sorry and maybe you could move it. i just thougt i’m not the only one interested in comparing the real facility to the one in HL1/OF/BS/BM…

I’m not sure why anyone would be interested in this since it has nothing to do with half-life or the mod. It’s just a facility that shares the same name. Nothing more.

Well that kind of silly, because firstly it’s a video game, and secondly there isn’t really a real world facility that’s comparable to BM in scope and size even if it were a real place. I’ll move this to the subforums for now.

i’ve got your point but i think it was valve’s idea to take THAT facility in the game and maybe they were there and took some photos for HL because maybe they’ve done some real places from there in the game? just my idea…

No, it was made up. Look at xilefs post.

They took photos for Half-Life 2 because they wanted City 17 to make sense aesthetically.

yes i remember that. they went to czech republic to take photos for City 17.

Poor MechUnit. I thought that was very interesting. Of course its not Half Life’s Black Mesa but it does sound like the name was ripped off from it.

sorry for not satisfying you guys… but what if Valve did take the real facility for the game and enhanced it with their phantasy. and keep in mind that i’ve started this topic just to ask if someone would know more about that.

i believe that can’t be a coincidence that the ingame facility is named Black Mesa, too AND was a R&D and testing facility for missiles, too. maybe Valve just knew about the existence of the real facilty and that it was a former missile base and the rest you see ingame just came from their minds.

and i’m sorry that my english is not to good so maybe it’s sometimes hard to get my point.

The only real Black Mesa in New Mexico is a golf club.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
