The Massive Friggin' Xen Thread

What’s your mod?

Shots from some of my recent work on it.

It’s going to be an attempt to bring Metroidvania style gameplay to the HL2 engine. Still trying to figure out how to make weapongates specific to grenades/the RPG. So the maps all have to be pretty open (Not TOO open because the engine can’t handle it) and nonlinear spaces for the AI to move around, and all connect to each other in different ways to allow for backtracking. I also plan a fast travel system to be unlocked at a certain point of the story, which allows the player to take some kind of transport between areas of the island (between maps basically).

But back to the topic!

I must confess that I’ve never played Metroid, but the promise of new gameplay is always welcome, so I will look forward to your mod.

As for the Anomalous Materials Xen sequence, I missed the bathing Bullsquids, so I’d love them to make a return.

I read this thread as much as I could to get caught up on what’s happening. Xen won’t be done til it’s done, i got that part. But my questions are: What kind of difficulties are the dev team having with finishing this mod? Is it mere creative troubles or is it just a matter of “it takes time?” Is there a lack of personnel that’s hindering on the team’s time table?

Just a curiosity.

The “pre-release”, as it were, was simply mind-blowing! And I would love to see what updates the team makes next!

I wish there was a new “Dev quotes on release and progress” thread for Xen, so people didn’t need to hunt down the news and bits from two-digit-page-count threads or history.
I haven’t been here since the release, so don’t expect me to do it again.

Meanwhile, my prediction for a release on April, 2nd 2042 still stands - Xen isn’t out, so BM: S wasn’t truly released yet.

There are no Xen news though and likely won’t be till they release it.

How about NDA…we will talk about it when its time to.

guessing the NDA is valves fault?

it’s a standard contract when entering into deals such as the whole greenlight thingy

So we need to learn to deal with no news… should be easy seeing as this went dark what 8 times.

I’ve seen alpha gameplay of Xen on YouTube, looked too good to be fake. I’m guessing before the end of the year, we’ll see it.

Fake, community work. Just proves how talented some folks are ^_

Wonder if you guys are talking about my map or vlad’s ? :stuck_out_tongue:

Both are ok.

Say what you will. Here are the links.

It’s not official.

Yeah, he’s right. They were made by the guy who posted the video…

For what we know, BM’s Xen won’t be an exact 1:1 recreation. And oh, it will definitely use new assets.

do to, valve we may never know at least until its finished. still hoping for the vort uprising that was cut from the first half life. yet still used in the second… canon but non existant.

That’s actually a really impressive knock off considering how fast the Russian guy pumped it out. On that note am I the only one who thinks we won’t be getting Xen for a long long epically long time? I mean why would they be put under an NDA and be unable to talk about the last few levels of a mod they’re creating unless Valve has some crazy plans to have them release the long awaited bug fixed and finished Xen included Black Mesa along with some mythical Orange Box or Half-Life sequel. And if that’s the case we’re now not only on Black Mesa time, but Black Mesa + Valve time combined and what’s worse this time we’re literally getting zero updates. I know the devs can’t talk about it, but I wouldn’t mind seeing more speculation from others on wtf is going on.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
