The Leech Thread

think what that was talking about, is the fact that they where a random entity like the roaches you couldn’t kill them they just did damage to the player at random till they where down to 10 health… I read that some where forget where think it was the wiki.

also off topic side note you can kill the roaches, by hitting them with a weapon that makes a bullet impact texture (over rides the roach)

…or by stepping on them. crunch

Yeah like others have said, it would make sense to introduce them as NPCs in specific areas where you expect them then, like put them in tanks in questionable ethics.

Is there a reason why the roaches were omitted? Surely they weren’t nearly as much of a nuisance as the leeches, nor did they do damage to the player.

They weren’t omitted; in the “would’ve let you in” room in Office Complex, they’re running around near the vending machine, but they’re really tiny and you can’t kill them.

who in their right minds would design an enemy that can damage you but you cant kill?

almost every game developer ever… I could find one or 2 games in each that have a enemy that can kill you but you can’t kill example leaches in half life 2 and the glowing antlion guard in ep2.

…You could kill the antlion guard in ep2. You just had to wait to be allowed to kill it. Now that I think about it though, why couldn’t you kill it again? I believe the extract was from a hive, not the guard.

That is weird though how playtesters couldn’t see the leeches. Those areas for me seem almost too bright. Maybe I just have the brightness on my monitor too high.

leeches in half life 2 were not an enemy, they were walls designed to keep the player from going to far into the water.

leeches are enemys in half life and killale, as they should in BM

Hardly noticeable apparently, as I totally missed them.

So I’ll restructure my inquiry. Since their appearance was far more minimalist than what was in the original game, why in particular was their presence downsized to noninteractive?

It’s obvious that they weren’t exactly a core mechanic of great importance, but it’s still, more or less as much of a noticeable omission to that of the leeches.

Something about entity limits and whatnot.

I’m not an expert on Hammer or the limits of the Source engine, so I can accept that logic.

Specifically, they were made into particle effects, and you can’t kill particle effects.

Roaches’ size is too small for a model, but in real life cockroaches are quite big. Roaches in BM seem to be even smaller than flies. Maybe if they were enlarged, they would become an NPC and be killable?

They made it into a particle effect to reduce the amount of entities. They’re pushing the entity limit as it is.

The leeches in the original were a pest, not hard at all, but just really annoying and no fun whatsoever. I’m glad they were cut.

I didn’t like them either. They were just there for the sake of it I feel.

Now that Black Mesa has amazingly scary/murky water, I feel like that’s enough to kind of set the mood without re-introducing pests that feel like the equivalent of flies on a hot day.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
