The Leech Thread

Is there any chance they could be re-added as an option in the menu, off by default? Their absence is felt, even if they were a bit of a pain gameplay-wise.

They were cut in the first release, IDK why but I think they will be readded in the Xen release.

What on Earth makes you think that?

I think too they will be readded + make them bigger and slower… they will be scary then…

Making Xen a surprise, I guess? That could also be the reason of the removal of the bullsquids drinking in Anomalous Materials.

EDIT: wait, leeches are already in hl2 why hide it? i really dont know

Hmmm, I had noticed a lack of leeches, but it didn’t bother me all that much. They were more of a nuiscance anyways. I did miss the cochroaches though.

Why a dumb idea? They’re hardly an integral part of the game. The devs had far more important things to get on with.

Did you cry when you noticed that they weren’t in the game? I bet you raged and smashed your monitor. It’s a real game breaker isn’t it. :fffuuu:

In HL2 there was a vasy ocean to put them in…

In Black mesa no such place… It would be close quarter leech encounters…

No big deal but to have them in a certain place would help keep continuity… This is why questionable ethics might be the best place in containment but somehow escaped and later breeding in the wild.

I really don’t think they will add much in terms of rewarding gameplay but for continuity sake it should perhaps be given a place but more like the seed of an outbreak not hindering underwater sequences cannot see the benefit and glad they got cut for this reason

I, for one, was very glad that they were cut.

From a design standpoint they had little value in the original, providing nothing other than a minor irritation for the water sections.

From a logical standpoint they didn’t make any sense and nor did combatting them.

  • If they’re terrestrial leeches, how did they even get to a perfectly functioning underground science facility in the middle of the desert?
  • What kind of state of the art environmental hazard protection suit with reactive armor would be prone to leeches, terrestrial or otherwise?
  • You can’t swing a crowbar underwater proficiently enough to kill a leech in real life.
  • Why, for the love of jesus christ, would you be fucking about trying to kill leaches in the middle of an alien invasion? Priorities, Freeman.

I’m going to assert that they are not missed by the silent majority.

:stuck_out_tongue: Oh, yeah, and why would Freeman be killing barnacles? How could barnacles even hurt Freeman? They’re tiny and stick to the bottom of boats and docks and they don’t even do anything. (Maybe they’re alien barnacles, but my point still stands because I can’t imagine that an alien called a barnacle could possibly be at all different from normal terrestrial barnacles.)

^ [silent praise] ^

I actually didn’t know you could kill them in the original game. I assumed they were simply there to force the player to get out of the water quickly, and that they were unaffected by any action the player took.

You get a “not missed” vote from me.

Its an enemy, it makes water levels more interesting, and leeches ae far more important than dumb over the top “on prupose” voice acting for Hecu.

in truth I didn’t know that they where removed, never payed any attention to them in half life either.

I don’t really see why they were removed either. They aren’t a complex enemy, and it makes almost no difference whether they are there not. I think the answer could lie within another question. Were they removed, or were they just not put in?

https://forums.blackmesasource.com/showpost.php?p=516133&postcount=18

and there we have it the reason they where removed… and a good one at that, I bet that if they where added from what that says this topic would be on why they where a pain in the ass.

The waters in Power Up and Apprehension seem quite empty and dull without them. I would be glad if they implemented them as a harmless prop, like they said they might do.

wasted…all their ammo…on leeches…

did they drop their crowbars?

Not everyone played the original, nor did everyone know that you could kill leeches with the crowbar. . .
