In the end of Half Life you can refuse G-man’s offer. I dont know if someone have said this before, but it would be nice if you could actually fight the aliens/monsters. You know, of course you should make it impossible to win, but it would be nice if you just made a option to fight them. In the original you didnt even fight them. I would love if you could.
It has been posted many times before, and its still a good idea.
Okay, well im new on this site, so i dont know what has been posted before.
Fisticuffs with Alien Grunts? I don’t see that being much of a fight.
But in the original, you just saw the aliens. They could at least attack you.
I don’t know. I think there’s something to be said for the cinematic, ominous ‘fade to black’ ending about the original. Admittedly I did think it was a bit retarded to see the aliens just stare at you as though you were a cucumber, but at the same time you get to see the true frightening majesty of the Nihilanth’s forces preparing to invade. You see the ranks and rows of the alien grunts and the manta rays, and part of the organisation and fear of that would disappear if you were to fight them. The reason for this is that you’d see them break formation and then kill you - not the best lasting impression. I know I’d rather see the terrifying awe of thousands of alien grunts rather than watch them scurry about like lost children.
The whole point of the ending is that you don’t fight them - you’re meant to be over-awed by their power and it’s left as an intentional cut-off point. You already know what’s going to happen, so why frustrate yourself fighting a battle that you can’t win?
I think they should fix the alien grunts’ reactions though. Perhaps have them angrily grunting and roaring at Freeman when he teleports in.
Yeah well, that could be nice… But they look really strong, if just one of them attacked you, that would be nice.
They won’t include that. Any novice can make a room full of grunts in Hammer.
I think the idea would be that you wouldn’t fight them, you’d just try to survive them for as long as possible. But I don’t think that that would preclude the “cinematic, ominous ‘fade to black’ ending.” You die, then it fades to black and the credits roll.
I agree that you shouldn’t be able to fight them, but i believe that when gordon teleports in the creatures should be shocked then gordon should suddenly go unconscious then for a brief moment gordon should see a blurry image of a alien crush you then it should go black. (maybe hear gmans voice in his last seconds of living…)
sorry for the bad grammar…BTW Gordon shouldn’t go unconscious because he’s scared…that would be anti-climatic but should be hit in the head from the back or something. OOOO or gordon slowly start to back away, then turns around to run but surprise big mean alien there to knock you out.
I wonder what leaving it unchanged except for some sound effects over the ending black might do… Still leaves everything up to one’s imagination, but strengthens the hint that you are not going to survive. (The end of the last episode of Blake’s 7 comes to mind…)
I think the idea of “surviving as long as possible” would make the scene very arcady and ruin the mood. Perhaps a better option is to have the front row of grunts march slowly towards you as the screen fades, while Freeman is rooted to the spot with fear. This conveys the feeling of imminent death much better, and doesnt lead to any mad jumping about the room as you try to avoid getting shot.
I just hope that there’s a Gargantua or two in the room.
I think its fine as is.
The room of grunts was pretty daunting to me when I first played through. It was even worse when I noticed the manta’s hovering over.
I think rather than letting the player run or fight they should just stick with that “Aww, fuck” kind of vibe. Just make it awesome and Sourcey.
(saucy?)
^This, this, a thousand times this.
That is very nice for the ending. The only suggestion I could even think of for it is to have the sound of a hundred enemy shots going off just after it has totally faded to black. Though I’m not particularly convinced it would be better than just the fade out would be.
I think that the last thing you see should be a Gargantua running through the crowd to punch you in the face.
That’s what I said above. The Blake’s 7 scene had Blake surrounded by loads of badguys with guns, and ended with a shot on him and his gun, faded to black then had loads of gunshots etc. Death by implication.
