The Forum | Complaints & Concerns Go Here

imagine the chaos. my my this is tempting eh? :evil snicker:

If I were a moderator you wouldn’t even have to think about it.

I actually think that this forum created a great community! Sure it isnt perfect but the amount of things I have laughed at because of the sheer stupidity or wittiness of posts is beyond my counting capacity (which IS above 3 btw). I even learned quite a few things along the way.

I just think people shouldn’t expect everybody to respect/have a bromance with them because they declare their existence on a forum. Anyway forums evolve organically out of the individuals who populate them, and hence they are not adapted to all individuals, like any peer group.

deleting the forum would give its members something to talk about… but where:fffuuu:?

This guy, right here? you all see him?

I elect him most awsomest member of the month.

Doesn’t Dillxn have a forum on his reverse Black Mesa site?

Oh and I think Gabzoman has a good point too.

Hello, Catz

I hope that’s not the conclusion you came to after reading my linked post, because that would mean I failed to deliver my point.

What I’m asking is that

  • Obscenities and vulgarisms are DELETED and their posters are tempa-banned.
  • Forums are reorganized so that the top-most forum is named “FOR NEW VISITORS” and includes “READ THIS FIRST” (1 kb of absolutely basic information)
  • the immature quote on the front page dissapears (“Black mesa is some hot shit” or whatever)
  • Posting requires that the poster writes a “FAQ-verification code” into an additional input box (the FAQ verification code would be written somewhere in the FAQ; it wouldn’t be password field, so auto-complete would allow those who’ve filled it in once to fill it in every other time automatically) – this way, people would have to look into FAQ before posting for the first time
  • It is clearly explained that Almost every question imaginable and every suggestion imaginable have already been posted, so user should search for keywords in his/her question/suggestion before attempting to post any additional questions/suggestions
  • Users should be strongly asked to drop the immature bullshit they keep doing like “in b4 lock”, “ninja’d”, “about 7” and “I SEA WAD YOU DIED THEIR!” – doing these should result in tempa-banning (Experienced user should be able to use Preview functionality and thus see that he has been ninja’d)

I think Catz may have been being facetious here.

Obscenity and vulgarisms (within limits) are in common usage in real life. Heck there’s one on the frontpage. vBulletin can censor these as an option I believe. I don’t mean to cause offense to you, but swearing on the forum is not really at an extreme, and until it is censoring it shouldn’t be the concern of mods and devs.

It tells you to read the FAQ when you sign up. If people don’t pay attention to this then putting stuff at the top of the forum won’t make anyone who doesn’t want to read the FAQ or rules want to read them.

It would then be a miss-quote. As I’ve said kinda said above “fuck” is not really considered that offensive in current day terms. Sorry it’s a fact of life. No-one forces you to use this word. Why force others not to?

What if we don’t use autocomplete? Don’t use a browser which has an autocomplete? If we lose our autocomplete, or regularly change computers (the ones at my uni don’t retain the autocomplete, neither I imagine would cyber cafes) then we’d have to go trawling through the FAQ every time we come to the forum.

A solid idea, but getting people to do that is pretty much impossible. Some will, some won’t, most of the people who need to search won’t anyway.

“in b4 lock” is annoying I agree. If you use the “quick reply” option you can’t preview. Besides how annoying is seeing “ninja’d” actually? “about 7” is a community in joke, this is a community, we do like to joke y’know. “I SEA WAD YOU DIED THEIR!” Again this is just humour, lighten up a bit.

Sorry if I’ve offended but that’s just my view on the matter.

I really despise rick rolls, and the inb4lock thing gets to me sometimes too. But other than that, my particular preference is to normally stay out of it unless it becomes hostile, flame, baiting or sharking… or off topic for too long.

I don’t wanna censor too much, otherwise where is the laughter?

But I do know what you mean there and thank you for offering us all your views on what you are seeing. =0)

No problem.

People are asking and answering all my questions before I think of them. Hence, why I never post.

The thing is, if there’s a cockroach that is going to ask stupid questions and make stupid posts then making a 10 post limit may just encourage 10 useless posts.

Maybe if you constrained where the 10 posts were allowed to be it might increase the chances of them seeing the answers to the some silly questions before they post?

I think we may be forgetting that our biggest problem is not always the BRAND new folks.

Just the relatively new ones, like erm… me :frowning:

Our biggest problem is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cdiz0k0Rudw

and that will never be solved by any kind of post limit. but, acknowledging the problem is the first step!

Yeah I could just foresee a conflict there, what with us porn enthusiasts having to reset our browsing history and all. Clearly this is not the answer.

Just get firefox/chrome and do private browsing.

:frowning: and me but I lurked for ages, do I get lurker points?

Yeah i was a lurker too. Actually I’ve joined the forum 3 times now in it’s various guises. This is the most I’ve hung around though.

The new windows advert tells me IE do private browsing too.

Please look at this – it’s a slightly customized phorum :
https://www.dracidoupe.cz/moudrasova/post.php?f=1
The fourth line of the form, where you see some strange language and the numbers 300 and 83, is the customization. The motivation behind THAT change was to effectively block “phorum-bots” (they cannot answer the question correctly), while everyone else learnt that they simply have to write 383 into the field. I’m pretty sure the “FAQ verification code” would be something similarly easy to remember, it would just be written elsewhere and not right next to the form.

Do you always have to put in 383? Surely you could just modify your forum bot to add in the 383. I’m digressing.

The only way to get them to read the entire FAQ would be to put it at the bottom of the FAQ, I’m willing to bet that’s the first place they’d look for it. Then it’s just hassle for the rest of us.

It’d probably be easier to put a script in the FAQ which downloads a cookie after being on the FAQ page for 5 minutes. Don’t tell anyone it’s there, then when you register the “register” button doesn’t activate unless you have the cookie.
